LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

Recognizes the connection between the definition of a measure of position

and its interpretation in a given distribution.
Interprets a particular measure of position in distribution.
 Appreciate the importance of interpretation of measure position in real-life
situations.
INTERPRETING
MEASURES OF POSITION
Measures of position refers to the position where score and data are located
relative to others in the given distribution.
INTERPRETING
MEASURES OF POSITION
Also, we have discussed the relationships among the measures of position as
shown in the illustration below:
INTERPRETING
MEASURES OF POSITION
Measures of position give a range where a percentage of the data fall. The
measures we consider here are percentiles, quartiles and deciles.

The Pn percentile of the set data is a measurement such that after the data are
ordered from smallest to largest, at most, p% of the data are less than or equal
to this value. In symbol,

Pn ≤ to the solved value

There are two other important percentiles. The 25th percentile, typically
denoted, Q1, and the 75th percentile, typically denoted as Q3. Q1 is commonly
called the lower quartile and Q3 is commonly called the upper quartile.
The Qn quartile of the set data is a measurement such that after
the data are ordered from smallest to largest, at most, Q of the
data are less than or equal to this value. In symbol,
Qn ≤ to the solved value

Deciles are similar to quartiles. But while quartile sort data into
four quarters, deciles sort data into ten equal parts.

The Dn decile of the set data is a measurement such that after the
data are ordered from smallest to largest, at most, D of the data
are less than or equal to this value. In symbol,
Dn ≤ to the solved value
However, percentile rank, quartile rank, and
decile rank of the data set is measurement
such that after the data are ordered from
smallest to largest, at most, percentile rank,
quartile rank, decile rank is greater than or
equal to the solved value.
LET’S TRY THIS ONE!
1. In a 20 – items Mastery Test in Mathematics 10, the scores of Grade 10 STE
students are shown in the table below:

A. Using the test scores of STE Students, if
Q2 = 13, how many students belongs to
Q2?

B. Using table 1, if D5 = 16, how many

students belongs to D5?

C. Using table 1, if P50 = 16, how many

students belongs to P50?
2. Calculate D4 of the Mathematics test scores of Students taking modular
distance learning and interpret the solved value.
