WHAT IS
COMPUTER
NETWORK?
A computer network is a system
that allows multiple computers
to communicate and share
resources, such as files and
printers, over a shared medium.
It enables data exchange and
collaboration between devices,
facilitating efficient
communication and information
sharing.
ELEMENTS OF COMPUTER
NETWORK
DEVICES -Are integral components
 Computers, forming the nodes within a
network, facilitating
 servers, communication and
 routers, resource sharing among
interconnected systems.
 Switches
 printers
ELEMENTS OF COMPUTER
NETWORK
MEDIA
-Various types of media, such as
cables, wireless signals, and
optical fibers, serve as
transmission channels for data
packets between network
devices, providing the physical
infrastructure for communication.
ELEMENTS OF COMPUTER
NETWORK
PROTOCOLS
-Protocols establish the rules and
standards governing data formatting,
transmission, and reception within a
computer network, ensuring efficient
and compatible communication
between devices
BENEFITS OF NETWORK
It is a collection of two or
more computers, as well as
other related devices,
connected together so that
information can be
exchanged between them.
SHARED NETWORK HARDWARE

♠PRINTER
♠DISK DRIVE
♠MODEM
♠ROUTER

♠OPTICAL DRIVE
♠EXTERNAL DRIVE
♠TAPE DRIVE
BENEFITS OF SHARING INFO VIA NETWORK
-SOFTWARE AND DATA FILES CAN BE SHARED FOR ACCESS BY
MULTIPLE USERS
-ELECTRONIC MAIL E-MAIL CAN BE SENT AND RECEIVED
-COLLABORATION FEATURES ALLOW CONTRIBUTIONS BY MULTIPLE USERS TO A SINGLE DOCUMENT
-REMOTE-CONTROL PROGRAMS CAN BE USED TO TROUBLESHOOT PROBLEMS OR SHOW NEW USERS HOW TO PERFORM A TASK
TYPES OF NETWORK BY COVERAGE

 Personal Area Network (PAN)

 Local Area Network (LAN)
 Campus Area Network (CAN)
 Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
 Wide Area Network (WAN)
 Storage-Area Network (SAN)
 Enterprise Private Network (EPN)
 Virtual Private Network (VPN)
1. Personal Area Network (PAN)
A personal area network is a computer network for
interconnecting electronic devices within an individual person's
workspace.

2. Local Area Network (LAN)

A local area network is a computer network that
interconnects computers within a limited area such as a
residence, school, laboratory, university campus or office
building.

3. Campus Area Network (CAN)

A campus network, campus area network, corporate area
network or CAN is a computer network made up of an
interconnection of local area networks within a limited
geographical area
4. Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
A metropolitan area network is a computer network that
interconnects users with computer resources in a geographic region of
the size of a metropolitan area.

5. Wide Area Network (WAN)

is a large network of information that is not tied to a single
location.

6. Storage Area Network (SAN)

is a large network of information that is not tied to a single
location.

7. Enterprise Private Network (EPN)

is a computer network built by a business to interconnect its
various company sites such as production sites, offices, and shops.

8. Virtual Private Network (VPN)

WHAT IS COMPUTER COMMUNICATION?

Computer communication refers to the

exchange of data between computers or other
electronic devices using various
communication mediums such as cables,
wireless signals, or optical fibers. It
encompasses protocols, hardware, and
software components that enable devices to
transmit, receive, and process data reliably
and efficiently.
THE HARDWARE NEEDED IN COMPUTER
COMMUNICATION:
1. Computer:
The computer functions as the central node in a network, processing and transmitting data
to other devices.
2. Network Interface Cards (NICs):
NICs enable the computer to connect to a network, facilitating data transmission between
the computer and other network devices.
3. Modems:
Modems convert digital signals from the computer into analog or digital signals suitable for
transmission over various network mediums, ensuring connectivity with external networks.
4. Routers:
Routers direct data traffic between different networks, including routing data from the computer to
its intended destination, ensuring efficient communication.
5. Cables and Media:
Various cables and media physically connect the computer to the network, allowing for the
transmission of data between the computer and other network devices.
DIFFERENT METHODS OF COMPUTER
COMMUNICATION

1. Wired Communication
2. Wireless Communication
1. Wired Communication:
This method involves the use of physical cables or wires to transmit data between
devices.
Examples include Ethernet cables, USB cables, and HDMI cables.
Wired communication typically offers higher data transfer speeds and more reliable connections
compared to wireless methods.
2. Wireless Communication:
This method utilizes electromagnetic waves to transmit data without the need for
physical cables.
Examples include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cellular networks.
Wireless communication provides greater mobility and flexibility but may be susceptible to
interference and signal degradation.
DIFFERENT SERVICES USED ON
THE INTERNET
WHAT IS INTERNET SERVICES?

Internet Services means services provided to

the public whose provision consists of
subscriber interaction with the Internet or the
transmission of information to or over the
Internet.
SOME SERVICES USED ON THE INTERNET
INCLUDE:

 .Email Services

 Social Media Platforms

 Search Engines

 Video Streaming Platforms

 Cloud Storage
SOME SERVICES USED ON THE INTERNET
