Understanding Quadratic

Functions
What is a Quadratic
Function?
● A second degree polynomial function
● Represented as f(x) = ax^2 + bx + c
● Or y = ax^2 + bx + c
● Where a ≠ 0 and a, b, c are real numbers
● What do you think "second degree"
means?
Forms of Quadratic Functions
● Standard Form: f(x) = ax^2 + bx + c
● Vertex Form: f(x) = a(x - h)^2 + k
● Can you identify the differences between these forms?
The Graph of a
Quadratic Function
● Called a parabola
● U-shaped curve
● Can open upward or downward
● How do you think the direction relates to
the value of 'a'?
Parts of a Parabola: Opening
● Upward opening: a > 0
● Downward opening: a < 0
● Can you think of real-world examples of parabolic shapes?
Parts of a Parabola:
Vertex
● The turning point of the parabola
● Highest point if opening
downward
● Lowest point if opening upward
● Why do you think the vertex is
important?
Parts of a Parabola: Axis
of Symmetry

● Vertical line passing through the

vertex
● Divides the parabola into two
equal halves
● Can you explain what "symmetry"
means in this context?
Identifying Quadratic Functions: Equation Form

● Look for x^2 term

● Highest exponent of x should be 2
● Example: f(x) = 2x^2 + x - 7 is quadratic
● Can you explain why f(x) = 6x - 11 is not quadratic?
Identifying Quadratic
Functions: Table of Values

● Look at first and second

differences
● First differences: not constant
● Second differences: constant
● Why do you think the second
differences are constant?
● To further enhance your
understanding of quadratic
functions, kindly watch the short
video on the next slide.
Practice: Is it Quadratic?
● f(x) = x^3 + 2x + 1
● g(x) = -3x^2 + 5x - 2
● h(x) = 4x + 7
● Can you explain your reasoning for each function?
Real-World
Applications
● Projectile motion
● Satellite dishes
● Suspension bridges
● Can you think of other
examples in everyday life?
