Multiple Activity Chart
A multiple activity chart is a chart on which the activities of more than
one subject (worker, machine or item of equipment) are each
recorded on a common time scale to show their interrelationship.
Purpose: It helps identify inefficiencies, improve coordination,
and optimise the use of resources (people, machines, and time).

Objectives of Multiple Activity Chart
• Optimize workforce and machine utilisation: To
minimise idle time by synchronizing tasks between
operators and machines.
• Identify Bottlenecks: Shows where machines or
operators are idle, allowing for process improvements.
• Enhance Work Distribution: Helps in balancing
workloads across operators or between machines.
• Improve Coordination: Allows for better scheduling
and planning of activities to avoid time wastage.

Types of Multiple Activity Chart
• Man-Machine Activity Chart- when one operator is
working on one machine.
• Multi-man Activity Chart- when a group of workers
are working on a machine.
• Man- Multi-machine activity chart- when a single
operator is working on a number of machines.
• Multi man- Machine chart- a group of operators
working on a common central machine.

Components of a Multiple Activity
Chart
• Operators/Workers: Represented in rows showing
activities
• Machines: States like working, idle, setup
• Time Scale: X-axis represents time
• Activity Blocks: Represent the duration of activities

Existing Method
•Worker stops the machine to perform all tasks, leading to idle machine
time.

• The machine remains idle for nearly three-quarters of the operation

cycle.

•Tasks like removing and locating the workpiece must be done with the
machine stopped.

•Worker remains idle while the machine runs on automatic feed.

Analysis of Tasks
• Tasks are divided into those that must be done with the machine
stopped and those that can be done while the machine is running.
• Performing more tasks while the machine is running will reduce overall
cycle time.

Improved Method
•Tasks like gauging, breaking edges with a file, and placing castings are
done while the machine is running.

•Boxes for finished and unfinished work are placed next to each other,
allowing simultaneous handling of castings.

•Cleaning of the machined casting is deferred until after the sharp edges
are broken, saving time.
Improvements
•Time savings of 0.64 minutes per cycle.

•32% increase in productivity for both the milling machine and the worker.

•Improvement achieved without any capital outlay.

•The original method had a sequence where: Fitters had to wait for
electricians to remove heaters before unfastening the vessel cover.

•Electricians had to wait for fitters to replace the cover before re-
installing the heaters.

Upon critical examination,

•This sequential it was
approach caused idlefound that:
time and inefficiencies.
•The cover could be unfastened while the heaters were
being removed.
•The heaters could be replaced while the cover was being
secured.
•The new method significantly reduced idle time for both fitters and
electricians.
•As a result, the operation time was reduced by 32%.
•The rigger's time remained unchanged, as their tasks were
independent of the heater and cover removal.
