INTRODUCTION
This project provides an excellent solution for the

farmer need not go to the farm to water his field.

The farmer can use his cell phone to start/stop the

irrigation motor. The system at the motor side will

respond to the farmer in text messages.
TECHNOLOGIES USED
Embedded Systems

Mobile Telephone Systems

EMBEDDED SYSTEMS
Embedded systems do a very specific task.

Embedded system allow the system hardware to be

simplified so costs are reduced.

Embedded systems are constrained for power. Many

embedded systems operate through a battery, the

power consumption has to be very low.
MOBILE TELEPHONE SYSTEM
Cellular is one of the fastest growing and most

demanding telecommunications applications.

The concept of cellular service is the use of low power

transmitters where frequencies can be reused within a

geographic area.
Here in our project GSM modem is used to send the

messages to start/stop motor.

GSM MODEM

•A GSM modem is a wireless

modem that works with a
GSM wireless network.
•Like a GSM mobile phone,
a GSM modem requires a
SIM card from a wireless
carrier in order to operate.
• AT commands are
instructions used to control a
modem.
CONCEPTS OF SMS TECHNOLOGY
1. Validity Period of an SMS Message
2. Message Status Reports
3. Message Submission Reports
4.Message Delivery Reports
SERIAL COMMUNICATION
MAX 232 IC used here is for serial communication.

This IC provides best noise rejection and very reliable

against discharges and short circuits.

this IC converts RS232 voltage levels to
microcontroller voltage levels and vice versa.
INTERFACING MAX232 WITH
MICROCONTROLLER
LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY

LCD screen consists of two lines with 16 characters each.

It is having the ability to display numbers, characters and

graphics.
Ease of programming for characters and graphics.
LCD interface with the
microcontroller
DRIVER CIRCUTE
The MOC301XM and MOC302XM series are

optically isolated triac driver devices.

This series is designed for interfacing between

electronic controls and power triacs to control

resistive and inductive loads for 115/240V AC
operations.
SOFTWARE TOOLS
Keil µv3, Proloads are the two software tools used to

program microcontroller.
Keil compiler is software used where the machine

language code is written and compiled.

Proload is a programmer which itself contains a

microcontroller in it other than the one which is to be

programmed.
SOFTWARE PROGRAMMING
ADVANTAGES
Availability more.

We can control the devices by sending sms.

Cheaper

More effective

Easy to change
DISADVANTAGES
Requires a continuous power supply

Continuously recharge the GSM SIMCARD

Maintenance cost is high

In case of SIM damage we have to reprogram

APPLICATIONS
Utilized for irrigation purpose.

Can be operated from any place in the world.

No need of manual check for moisture level in soil.

User friendly.
CONCLUSION
The project intends to interface the microcontroller

with the GSM modem and start the motor as per the
message received from the user mobile.
 It can be concluded that the design implemented in the

present work provide portability, flexibility and the data

transmission is also done with low power consumption.
FUTURE SCOPE
The project can be used as a base for realizing a

scheme to be implemented in other projects of greater

level such as weather forecasting, temperature
updates, device synchronization, etc.
The project itself can be modified to achieve a

complete Home Automation.
