Paraphrasing HAND-OUT # 10 PRETEST
Put a check mark on the items that express the

include cough, cold and fever. Did the writer use his own words in discussing about the symptoms of the disease and in analyzing the sentence?
Is the idea of the original sentence is still
intact? Original: Jake has a big heart for the poor and downtrodden.
Paraphrase: People who are poverty-stricken
are close to Jake’s heart. Is the writer able to paraphrase the original sentence without changing the thought of it?
Has the word order been inverted while
still achieving the idea of the original sentence? Strategies in Paraphrasing
1.Use synonyms Example: More than half of the patients have recuperated from the fatal covid illness.
Majority of the patients have recovered
from the deadly covid19 disease. 2. Change word order This means that you can use a different part of speech to replace the word from active voice to passive voice Example: In the wake of the disaster, military and health personnel work fast to save lives. Military and health employees are working double time to avert death caused by calamity 3. Change word form
Example: Peace talks between the
government and militants have not been successful because of unsettled issues. There is no success on the peace talks of the government and militants since issues have to be resolved first. 4. Use different attribution signals Example: “The government should provide the guidance and be the beacon for everyone to follow. Everyone should follow just one beacon. Not several, pointing in different directions.” -Atty. Gregorio Larrazabal According to Atty. Larrazabal the government should be the enlightenment and the inspiration of its citizens, and stay as symbol of hope, not confusing them 5. Change the sentence structure and use different connecting words.
