Strategies in

Paraphrasing
HAND-OUT # 10
PRETEST

Put a check mark on the items that express the

meaning of paraphrasing.
_______1. The writer rewords a statement written by
someone.
_______2. The essay or academic text is written
through phrasing.
_______3. Using synonyms for words used in the
original text.
_______4. Summarizing text using own words.
_______ 5. Own interpretation of other person’s idea.
Paraphrasing is writing our own version
of the original statement or text but
retaining
the same thought of it.

This is to furnish the readers an

information in a manner that is brief but
complete
Examples:
Original: High temperature, feeling feverish
and other respiratory problems are the
common signs of covid19.

Paraphrased: Symptoms of covid19 may

include cough, cold and fever.
Did the writer use his own words in
discussing about the symptoms of the
disease and in analyzing the sentence?

Is the idea of the original sentence is still

intact?
Original: Jake has a big heart for the poor and
downtrodden.

Paraphrase: People who are poverty-stricken

are close to Jake’s heart.
Is the writer able to paraphrase the
original sentence without changing the
thought of it?

Has the word order been inverted while

still achieving the idea of the original
sentence?
Strategies in Paraphrasing

1.Use synonyms

recuperated from the fatal covid
illness.

of speech to replace the word
from active voice to passive voice

successful because of unsettled issues.
There is no success on the peace talks of the
government and militants since

4. Use different attribution signals
Example: “The government should provide
the guidance and be the beacon for
everyone to follow. Everyone should follow
just one beacon. Not several, pointing
in different directions.”
-Atty. Gregorio Larrazabal
According to Atty. Larrazabal the
government should be the
enlightenment and the inspiration of its
citizens, and stay as symbol of hope, not
confusing them
5. Change the sentence structure and
use different connecting words.

Example: Despite improvements in the

past decade, the Philippines continues to
face public health challenges because of
its resource and capacity limitations.
In the Philippines, concerns in terms of
hospital incapability and means, for
instance, are some of the constraints even
with the country’s advancements in
recent years. (Amit, et al.2020)
