Transcoding Linear to Non-Linear Text and
Vice Versa
Transcoding Linear to Nonlinear text and vice
versa is a skill that one has to be familiar with
since it can be used in our everyday lives.
There will be times when you would have to
transcode a linear text to nonlinear text to
make it easier for other people to understand
it and a nonlinear text to linear text to have a
detailed description of a certain topic.
10
Steps in Transcoding Linear to Non-
Linear Text
A. Read the text and get the main idea.
B. Extract necessary information for the visual
information
C. Remember to use keywords or phrases only
D. Classify information into categories
E. Make sure to use the correct or appropriate
non-linear text to present the information
Example 1:
11
Influenza (flu) and COVID-19 are both contagious respiratory
illnesses, but they are caused by different viruses. Flu viruses can
cause mild to severe illness, including common signs and symptoms
such as fever, or feeling feverish, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue,
sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle pain, headache, and in some
cases vomiting and diarrhea. Typically, a person develops symptoms
anywhere from 1 to 4 days after infection. On the other hand, COVID-
19 seems to cause more serious illness in some people. Other signs
and symptoms of COVID-19, different from flu, may include changes in
or loss of taste or smell. In addition, a person with COVID-19 virus
develops symptoms 5 days after being infected, but symptoms can
appear as early as 2 days after infection or as late as 14 days after
infection, and the time range can vary.
12
Example 2:
Filipinos love music. One music
lovers are youth who listen to different
genres. According to the survey, 33% of
the youth listen to pop music while 29%
listen to indie and rock music, 15% listen
to country music, 13% listen to hip hop,
and 10% listen to classical music.

and are intended to display
the data in a way that is easy
to understand and remember.
14

Pie Chart
can be used to
show percentages
of a whole, and
represents
percentages at a
set point in time.
15
Bar Graph
Graphs are a common
method to visually
illustrate relationships in
the data. The purpose of a
graph is to present data
that are too numerous or
complicated to be
described adequately in
the text and in less space.
16

Line Graph
also known as a
line chart or a line
plot, is commonly
drawn to show
information that
changes over time
17

Pictograph
is a way to
represent data using
images. Each image
in the pictograph
represents a certain
number of things.
18

B. Tables
• are data structures that organizes information
into rows and columns. It can be used to both
store and display data in a structured format. For
example, databases store data in tables so that
information can be quickly accessed from specific
rows. Websites often use tables to display
multiple rows of data on page. Spreadsheets
combine both purposes of a table by storing and
displaying data in a structured format.
19

age working in different sectors
C. Concept Diagram or Concept 20

Mapping
• a diagram that depicts suggested
relationships between concepts.
• represents ideas and information as
boxes or circles, which it connects
with labelled arrows, often in a
downward-branching hierarchical
structure.
