Personal relationship refers to the association
and close connections between people,
formed by emotional bonds and interactions.
These bonds often grow from and are formed
by mutual experiences.
Family is defined as “two or more persons who are
related by birth, marriage, or adoption, and who live
together as one household.” It includes siblings and
parents who may with you as you grow up, and
relatives such as grandparents, aunts, uncles, and
cousins who you may not see frequently.
A friendship can be thought of as a close tie
between two people that is often built upon
mutual experiences, shared interests,
proximity, and emotional bonding.
THREE TYPES OF FRIENDSHIP ACCORDING TO PARKER AND
ASHER (1993)

ACQUANTANCES
COMPANIONS
INTIMATES OR BESTFRIEND
Romantic partnerships, including marriage, are
close relationships formed between two people
that are built upon affection, trust, intimacy, and
romantic love. We usually experience this kind
of relationship with only one person at a time.
WHY PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS
ARE IMPORTANT ?
Healthy relationships are a vital component of
health and wellbeing. There is compelling evidence
that strong relationships contribute to a long,
healthy, and happy life. Research shows that
healthy relationships can help you live longer..
Three Brain Systems of Love or Stages of
Falling in Love
Lust refers to an urge or desire that motivates us to
partake in sexual activity.

Attraction is described as the love-struck phase. This is

the stage when a person loses sleep and appetite over
someone and become excited to someone while
daydreaming of special person. It is part of lust because it
involves focusing our attention to a particular person or
desire. Many factors influence attraction.
Factors of Attraction
1. Physical Attractiveness
Is one of the primary determinants of romantic attraction.
2.Proximity
People tend to get attracted to people who are geographically closer to
them.
3. Similarity
People tend to pick partners who are similar to themselves.
4. Reciprocity
People tend to like others who reciprocate their liking.
Attachment is a deep and enduring emotional
bond that connects one person to another
across time and space. It is when long-lasting
commitments are exchanged.
Love is a choice. You express your love for
another person not because you are forced to do
so but because you have decided to share
yourself with another person. Love also involves
trust and commitment.
The three components can be defined as follows:
Intimacy = involve liking, feeling of closeness connectedness, and bonding
resulting from genuinely knowing the other person

Passion = feelings of romance, physical attraction and sexual

consummation in the relationship.

Commitment = shared investments, or the “history” of the relationship

such as decisions and adjustments
Ancient Greeks studied
love and denote each
type by giving each one
a Greek name. Lee (1973)

COMMITMENT
Being committed in a relationship is to make a promise, pledge and
a decision to stay together despite the twists and turns encountered
in the relationship.
According to Goddard , there are three dimensions of
commitment in intimate relationships.
1. Commitment as an attraction or the “want to” aspect.
The relationship makes the person happy and satisfied . A person
becomes committed to someone because of what he/she gets from
the relationship.
2. Commitment as a moral obligation or the “ought to” aspect
3. Commitment as a constraint or the” have to “ aspect.
UNACCEPTABLE AND ACCEPTABLE EXPRESSIONS OF
ATTRACTION
• Adolescents, especially when new in relationship , tend
to be impulsive and want to spend most of their time
with their source of love and attraction. Because of
this, they may behave in unacceptable ways of
expressing attraction.
• Though different cultures may vary in expressions
of attraction the following are some commonly
acceptable and generally unacceptable expressions of
attraction.
• Glancing at each other social media (with
• Verbal communication - limitation )
saying I love you or I like • Holding hands
you • Walking arm in arm
• Smiling • Kiss on the cheeks or “beso
• Writing letters – beso “ in some occasions
• Phone calls or chatting • Going out (usually with
• Giving presents chaperons )
