Buen Suceso is venerated in the diocese. History The Augustinian fathers brought the image from Spain in 1580 as a gift from the King to Filipino converts. The Augustinians stayed in Palanyag (later to be known as Parañaque) and established St. Andrew’s Parish that year. History The petite image was later kept in the storage room for some time. Years later, an Indio caretaker named Catig, a poor native from Don Galo saw the image untouched and covered with dust and asked the sacristan if he could take the statue home. The sacristan obliged and Catig enshrined it in his home, lighting candles in its honor. History For years, Catig took care of the image and considered as his treasure and comfort. As Catig neared his end, his neighbors called Rev. Fr. Juan de Guevarra of the Order of St. Augustine to administer the Last Rites. Upon blessing Catig, Fr. De Guevarra saw the statue standing near the bed and asked if he could have it for 24 Pesos (note: the monetary value of the peso was of higher value during the Spanish Period) in exchange of Masses that will be offered to him. History A few moments later, Padre de Guevarra saw the image emit a mysterious light and heard glorious angelic hymns, leading him to conclude the image as being miraculous. Padre De Guevarra reported the miracle immediately to the Augustinian Superior Reverendo Padre Alonzo de Mentrida. Upon hearing Padre Guevarra’s words, Padre de Mentrida ordered that the icon be transported to St. Andrew’s church for veneration and on August 10, 1625, a great procession was Naming the Image Not knowing what to call the image of Our Lady, Padre Alonzo asked the other friars to write the names of all the famous titles of the Blessed Mother in Europe on strips of paper and placed them in an urn. A young child was asked to draw the name and for six consecutive times, the title “Nuestra Señora del Buen Suceso” was picked, so they named the image as such. Naming the Image Archbishop of Manila Miguel García Serrano and colonial officials based in Manila arrived and venerated the image. Archbishop Serrano is credited with instituting the novena and reconstructing the altar. After the reconstruction, another feast was celebrated on February 22, 1626, attended by townsfolk and those from Miracles attributed to the Image Doña Maria Amada of Malate, Manila has a crippling disease heard the news of the miracle and re-enthronement of the image so she decided to see the image of the Virgin personally and ask for a cure for her disease. She was brought to the Cathedral Parish of St. Andrew to hear mass. After the mass ended, she walked by herself and went home. This happened on August 15, 1625, five days after the image was installed Miracles attributed to the Image In January 1627, Doña Lucia de Espinel of Manila was seriously ill to the point that a burial was prepared, and the notary public named Don Diego de Ibarra was called to take down her last will. One morning she woke up from her comatose state calling the name of the “Buen Suceso”. Though partly recovered, the fever affected her sanity causing her limbs to become spastic. In February, she was brought to St. Andrew’s where she recovered completely. She Miracles attributed to the Image In the 1600s, potable water was insufficient in Parañaque and when the drought worsened, it caused a widespread problem. Devotees immediately left the church after the novenas in order to avoid suffering from thirst. From August 10-15, 1625, prayers for the Lady’s intervention were done. Soon after, the ground striated to yield abundant water. The crowd rushed to the shoreline facing the church and wherever they dug they found clear water of great quantity. Miracles attributed to the Image Numerous miracles were also reported through the years that the Virgin became known within and outside Parañaque. During the Manila- Acapulco Galleon Trade, the Galleons used to pass by the shores of La Huerta and cannons were fired in homage to the Virgin of Good Events. Our Lady in turn also became their anchor of hope and she gave her maternal protection that she earned the title “Abogada de los Navigantes” (Protectress/Defender of the Miracles attributed to the Image With the miracles that are continuously happening through her intercession and upon the request of her devotees, the image of Nuestra Señora del Buen Suceso was canonically crowned on September 8, 2000, the Feast of the Nativity of Mary. On that same day, Nuestra Señora del Buen Suceso de Parañaque was officially proclaimed as the “Patroness of Parañaque City”.
