Inverse functions

Contents Objectives: to be able to,

1. Linear inverses. • find inverses of linear and quadratic

functions,
2. Domain and range of a function and it’s
inverse. • understand the relationship between a
function, it’s inverse and the domain and
3. Inverses of quadratics. range.

4. Mixed questions. Prior knowledge: you should already know

how to,

• understand the term function, domain

and range,

• be able to substitute numbers into a

function,

• change the subject of an equation,

• complete the square of a quadratic.

Linear inverse functions – changing the subject
Find the inverse of each of the following.
f (x) 5x - 3, x  
Remember to use correct notation.
The inverse of f (x) is written as f  1 (x).
1. f (x) 4 x -1, x  
To find the inverse we replace f (x) with y,
and make x the subject of the equation.

Finally replace the y with an x. f  1 x  
