A KWL chart is a graphic

organizer and learning tool


that helps students share their
prior knowledge about a topic,
understand new lessons, and give
feedback about what they learned.
 KWL is an acronym for:
Know – What I already know
Want – What I want to know
Learn – What I learned
K-W-L charts are an easy to use instructional reading strategy
that is used to guide students through a text.

Students begin by brainstorming everything they Know about


a topic.
This information is recorded in the K column of a K-W-L chart.

Students then generate a list of questions about what they


Want to Know about the topic. These questions are listed in
the W column of the chart. During or after reading, students
answer the questions that are in the W column.

This new information that they have Learned is recorded in


the L column of the K-W-L chart.
What is the purpose of a KWL chart?
 K-W-L chart is a three-column graphic organizer
that provides space for participants to record what
they Know, what they Want to know, and what they
have Learned.
 K-W-L charts are an easy way to activate participants'

prior knowledge and get them to set an intention for


their learning.

Two versions are included to support
student learning:

 Lined
- To help organize handwriting and
thoughts

 Unlined
- For more imaginative and
freewheeling note takers
 The KWL chart was created by Donna Ogle in
1986.
 A KWL chart can be used for all subjects in a

whole group or small group atmosphere.


 The chart is a comprehension strategy used

to activate background knowledge prior to


reading and is completely student centered.
 It prompts students to activate prior

knowledge, generate questions to


investigate, and inventory the new
knowledge that emerges from investigation.
