Communication
• Communication is transfer of information from
one place to another place
Basic block of communication system
• Transmitter
• Receiver
• Media (wireless and wire)
Wireless communication
• When two system are communicating without using
any physical medium it is called wireless
communication.
• Wireless communication, or sometimes
simply wireless, is the transfer of information or
power between two or more points that are not
connected by an electrical conductor. The most
common wireless technologies use radio waves.
• Mobile communication
• Satellite communication
Wireless communication
What is Wireless communication
• Wireless communication is a type of data
communication that is performed and
delivered wirelessly without any wire.
Wire communication
• When two system are communicating by using
any physical medium it is called wire
communication
• PSTN
Driving factors and advantages of wireless
communication?
• Explosive increase in the demand of wireless
connectivity
• Sometimes it is impractical to lay cables
• User mobility
• Lesser Cost
• Flexible and easy expansion
Limitations of wireless communication
• Limited amount of bandwidth
• Lesser security: needs efficient security
algorithms
• Power
Wireless VS wired communication

• Wireless communication:
• Mobility: it’s the ability to move freely and easily
• Anywhere and anytime connectivity
• Easy to deploy (no cable cloud)
• High security issues (as compared to wire)
• Signal attenuation is high (unguided)
• Need high transmission power
Wireless VS wire communication
• Wire communication:
• Mobility is not allowed
• Low security issue
• Signal attenuation is very low (guided)
• High bandwidth
Wireless devices
• In the present days, wireless
communication system has become
an essential part of various types of
wireless communication devices, that
permits user to communicate even
from remote operated areas. There
are many devices used for wireless
communication like mobiles. Cordless
telephones, GPS, satellite television
and wireless computer parts.
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technologies.
Means of communication In wireless
network
• The means of communication in wireless
network is electromagnetic waves.
• Electromagnetic waves are the waves which
can travel through the vacuum of outer space
• It does not require the presence of material to
transfer its energy
• Electromagnetic signals are made of multiple
frequencies
Introduction to 802.11
IEEE Hierarchy

Now 802 project covers local area networking and MAN. Both these projects are
covered in this project.
Then in this project different technologies exist like Bluetooth, Ethernet , and Wi-Fi
802.11

In the projects we have workgroups which that focus on a specific technology either a
local area networking technology or MAN technology

Like 802.3 is a workgroup which works on Ethernet LANS

And 802.11 focuses on Wi-Fi LANs
802.15 defines Bluetooth so there are many workgroups which work in 802 project
802.11 Wireless Networking Standards
• Wi-Fi was developed in 1997 by IEEE.
• At that time the speed was 2Mbps.
• In 1999 they developed 2 new standards
802.11a: this standard was for commercial use.
 The frequency of this standards was 5GHz
 Speed was 54Mbps
802.11b: this standard was for domestic use
 The frequency of this standards was 2.4GHz
 Speed was 11Mbps
802.11 Wireless Networking Standards
 As much the frequency is high we will achieve
the maximum speed but the range will be
limited.
 If the frequency is low we will achieve less
speed but the penetration of the signal will be
far and the range will be more
802.11 Wireless Networking Standards
• In 2003 a new standard was developed which
they named 802.11g
in this standard they combined both the
standards 802.11a and 802.11b
To achieve both the range and the maximum
speed.
802.11 Wireless Networking Standards
• In 2009 a new standard was developed which
they name 802.11n
• This standard could operate on 2.4GHz as well
as 5GHz
• Most devices still use this standard
802.11 Wireless Networking Standards
• In 2013 a new standard was developed it was
named as 802.11ac
• Its speed is 1.3Gbps
• It operates on 5GHz
Note: the names a,b,g and ac do not have any
specific meaning they are just amendments to
the 802.11 standard
802.11 Operating Modes

• Infrastructure Mode is used when there is at least one

Wireless Access Point and client. The client connects to
the network through the Access Point to gain internet
access.
• Ad Hoc Mode is used when wireless clients want to
directly communicate with each other without going
through an Access Point. This is also called peer-to-peer
mode.
• Note: The vast majority of 802.11 WLANs that you will
have encountered will have been operating in
Infrastructure Mode.
