Coordinating and Subordinating Conjunctions


Importance
Coordinating and Subordinating Conjunction are
Important because they join different clauses to form
long, well constructed sentences.
What is a Clause?
● Do you Know ?
● Can you define it in your own words?
● How many types of clauses we have and how
many of them we use of them in everyday life?
First we need to Understand what a Clause is and
how many Types it has:

A clause is a group of words containing a subject as well as a


finite verb. A sentence can be fully called a clause only when it has a
single subject and a single verb.A clause may function as a noun or as an
adjective or as an adverb. It has 5 types but we use mostly 2 in or everyday life.

4. Coordinate Clause Clause.
5. Non-Finite Clause
Dependent and Independent Clause
A dependent clause is phrase that needs to have another

one in order to make it a complete sentence.

Subordinate conjunction+subj+verb

E e.g I guessed that she couldn’t pass. .

An independent clause is a phrase that are not influenced by any other sentences

that it can present independently satisfying the basic clause. In a nutshell, it can stand

alone its own sentence.

Subject+Verb= Complete thought

e.g: He is a wiseman. .
When to use Coordinating Conjunctions
Use it to join independent clauses, phrases and individual

Words.

For Example: She picked daffodils And sunflowers which are usually yellow.
When to use Subordinating Conjunctions:
Introduce a dependent Clause and shows a relationship
Between the dependent and independent clauses.It is used in
The beginning of a dependent clause and create a link to and
independent clause.
Common Conjunctions

. Whether . When . While . As . Because . As soon as . Even if . If

. Because . Unless . Although . After . Before . However . Even though

Note: It shows the relationship of dependent and independent clause in term of place, time and causes and
effects.
For Example:

C Cause

P Place

1. If you do your homework,you can play with the dog.( cause)


2. They lost the football game because of the bad weather.(reason)
3. We will go after I come back. (time)
4. We can meet where we met the last time.(place)
