Our lesson for today is
INTERCEPTS OF
POLYNOMIAL
FUNCTION
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson,
the students must be
able to
1.Find the x-intercept
2.Find the y – intercept
3.Relate intercepts to
real –life situation
INTERCEPTS
INTERCEPTS are
used to determine
the points where
the graph
intersects or
touches the x- axis
and the y-axis.
INTERCEPTS OF POLYNOMIAL
FUNCTION
X – INTERCEPT Y– INTERCEPT
The x values when y The y values when
=0 x=0
The values of x The values of y
where the graph where the graph
intersects the x - axis intersects the y -
axis
INTERCEPTS
X – INTERCEPT OF POLYNOMIAL
FUNCTION
- the x values when y=0
Take note: The polynomial function should be written
in factored form.
Example: y = (x + 2)(x – 3)(2x – 5)
Let y = 0
x-3=0 2x - 5 = 0
x+2=0
x = -2 x=3 2x = 5
x = 5/2
The x-intercepts are -2, 3, . This means the
graph will pass through (-2, 0)(3, 0) and (5/2, 0)
INTERCEPTS
Y– INTERCEPT OF POLYNOMIAL
- the y values whenFUNCTION
x=0

Example: y = (x + 2)(x – 3)(2x – 5)

Let x = 0
y = (0 + 2)(0 – 3)(2(0) – 5)
y = (2)(-3)(-5)
y = 30
The y –intercept is 30. This means the graph will pass
through (0, 30 )
EXAMPLE 1:
Find the intercepts of
Find the factors of
x-intercepts:

𝒆𝒒𝒖𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒉 𝒇𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒐 𝒛𝒆𝒓𝒐

x+1=0 x+2=0 x+3=0

x = -1 x = -2 x = -3
The x-intercepts are -1, -2, -3. This means the
graph will pass through (-1, 0)(-2, 0) and (-3, 0)
EXAMPLE 2:
Find the intercepts of
y-intercept:

y=6

The y –intercept is 6. This means the graph will pass

through (0, 6 )
EXAMPLE 3:
Find the intercepts of
Factor out the common monomial factor

𝒆𝒒𝒖𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒉 𝒇𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒐 𝒛𝒆𝒓𝒐

x =0 x+2=0 x-1=0
x = -2 x=1
The x-intercepts are 0, -2, 1. This means the
graph will pass through (0, 0)(-2, 0) and (1, 0)

x-intercepts: 2, 1, -3
y-intercept: 6
2. y = x(x + 4)(x -3)
x-intercepts: 0, -4, 3
y-intercept: 0
