Our lesson for today is
INTERCEPTS OF
POLYNOMIAL
FUNCTION
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson,
the students must be
able to
1.Find the x-intercept
2.Find the y – intercept
3.Relate intercepts to
real –life situation
INTERCEPTS
INTERCEPTS are
used to determine
the points where
the graph
intersects or
touches the x- axis
and the y-axis.
INTERCEPTS OF POLYNOMIAL
FUNCTION
X – INTERCEPT Y– INTERCEPT
The x values when y The y values when
=0 x=0
The values of x The values of y
where the graph where the graph
intersects the x - axis intersects the y -
axis
INTERCEPTS
X – INTERCEPT OF POLYNOMIAL
FUNCTION
- the x values when y=0
Take note: The polynomial function should be written
in factored form.
Example: y = (x + 2)(x – 3)(2x – 5)
Let y = 0
x-3=0 2x - 5 = 0
x+2=0
x = -2 x=3 2x = 5
x = 5/2
The x-intercepts are -2, 3, . This means the
graph will pass through (-2, 0)(3, 0) and (5/2, 0)
INTERCEPTS
Y– INTERCEPT OF POLYNOMIAL
- the y values whenFUNCTION
x=0
y=6
x =0 x+2=0 x-1=0
x = -2 x=1
The x-intercepts are 0, -2, 1. This means the
graph will pass through (0, 0)(-2, 0) and (1, 0)
EXERCISES:
DETERMINE THE X and Y INTERCEPTS OF THE GRAPHS OF
THE FOLLOWING POLYNOMIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. y = (x – 2)(x – 1)(x + 3)
2. y = x + x – 12x
3 2
EXERCISES: SEIZE AND INTERCEPT ME
DETERMINE THE INTERCEPTS OF THE GRAPHS OF THE
FOLLOWING POLYNOMIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. y = (x – 2)(x – 1)(x + 3)
x-intercepts: 2, 1, -3
y-intercept: 6
2. y = x(x + 4)(x -3)
x-intercepts: 0, -4, 3
y-intercept: 0
ASSIGNMENT
Find the intercepts.
1) (x – 1) ( x2 – 5x + 6)
2) (x2 + x - 6) (x2 – 6x +
9)

EVALUATION: FIND THE INTERCEPTS OF THE
GRAPHS OF THE FOLLOWING POLYNOMIAL
FUNCTIONS:
1) y = (x + 2)(x – 3)(x + 1)
2) y = (x + 5)(x – 5)(x + 4)
3) y = x - 3x – 10
2
1. y = x3 + x2 – 12x
2. y = (x – 2)(x – 1)(x + 3)
3. y = 2x4 + 8x3 + 4x2 – 8x – 6
4. y = x4 - 16
5. y = x + 10x – 9x
