Summary from MATRIX table above
The optimal alternative is the one with highest total weight and is ranked as number
one as it shown in the table above. Hence from the table above ALTERNATIVE A
is the best alternative
Design of semiautomatic green bell peppers slicing machine
components
Semi-automatic green bell peppers slicing machine comprises of the following
components;
• Motor
• Cutting unit (blade & cutting disc)
• Feeding unit (hopper, hopper handle, hopper cover)
• Collector vessel
• Frame
• Mounting and Fixtures
Initial Design calculations
The designing analysis involve the following aspect

• The cutting unit comprises the disc and blades.

• The feeding unit (hopper sizes)

• The collector vessel. (Usually of any size not less that recommended one
• The electrical circuit consists of control button
Designing of hopper
Required to design volume (LxWxH dimensions) of hopper
From collected data the maximum size of green bell pepper is 15cm length and 8cm
width with volume approximately to 760cm3
Therefore, minimum area required for feeding hopper is 50.26cm 2, however for efficient of this
unit 40cm by 40 cm size selected which provide the total area of 1600 cm 2, the height of 15cm
as fringe to guide the path
Design of cutting blades
From diameter of the cutting disc 380 mm, 50 mm was offset,

10 mm the length remain is 140 mm,

available blades are of width of 18 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm ….

Hence, 25 mm of width is selected with the length of 150 mm

Therefore, dimension of cutting blades is 150 mm by 25 mm

Material used will be stainless steel for health purposes

Design of cutting disc
Design consideration of cutting disc was to obtain the diameter of disc in order to get
sufficient torque required to cut green bell peppers.
known data
density of disk is, ρ= 2710 kg/m 3 ,Mass of disc m = 300g, Height of disc h = 15

Actual volume = mass / density = 0.3 kg /2710 kg/m 3 = 1.1x10-4 m3

Calculated volume, From V = thus d = 300 mm

Minimum diameter for cutting disc will be 300mm, since the dimension of hopper
from above is 40cm to 40 cm, therefore disk is selected to be 380mm to make cutting
task easy and efficient
Speed selection of cutting disc

Speed in RPM = = = 200 RPM

now taking 300 RPM for smooth cutting , N = 300rpm ,ω = 2πx300/60, thus ω = 31 rad/sec

Moment of inertia of disc I =1/2 x mr2 ,thus I = 2.85 x10-3 kgm2

Energy consumed by disc E = ½ x I x (ω)2 =1.4 J

Thus work done = 1.4 J / 2 x 3600 = 0.2mW

The disc will need 0.2mW

Power required to cut the green bell peppers

From literature review(known data) green bell peppers shear at 1.2x10 3 N/m2
Required cross section area = height x width = 25 x 20 = 500cm 2
Force required = τ x A = 60N
From power P = F x V, But, V = ωr , P = 60N x 32rad/sec x 0.19m = 365 Watt
Due to the fact that, friction force plays a role on any surfaces in contact, therefore the power is
selected should be 500W(0.7Hp) – 2000W(2.68Hp) to overcome all frictional forces and energy
loss in components
But due to standards of motor 1500W and 1500RPM is selected(R.S. KHURMI & J.K. GUPTA,
Machine design 2005)
Torque required to make cut

From, power, P = T ω

Where, T is torque and ω is angular speed

T = P/ ω

T=365 W/ 31 rad /sec

T 10 N/m
Pulley and belt drive design
Determination of the reduced rpm,
From 𝑁1 × 𝑖1 = 𝑁2 × 𝑖2 ,

𝑁2 = rpm = 750𝑟𝑝𝑚

Therefore, the rpm will be reduced to 750rpm.

When the rpm reduced then, the torque will be increased to (10N/m×2) = 20N/m

For N1 ω = = 157.08 rad/sec

Determination of centre distance between the driver and driven pulley

From, Cmin = 0.55(D1 +D2) + h (R.S. KHURMI & J.K. GUPTA, Machine design 2005)
Cmax = 2(D1 + D2)

Where h is the belt thickness. For the belt type A, h =8

Cmin = 0.55(100 + 200) +8 =173mm

Cmax = 2(100+200) = 600mm

Now, minimum distance (Cmin = 173mm) is taken

Determination of angular velocity of driven pulley

Then determination of angular velocity of driven pulley

ω2 = , ω2 = = 78.55rad/sec

now, speed ratio 𝑖= 𝑖 = = 2

Known data; for pulleys

Speed ratio (𝑖) = 2

Diameter of the driver pulley (d) = 100mm (LITERATURE REVIEW)

Driven diameter (D) = 𝑖 × 𝑑 = 2 x 100 mm D = 200 mm. (J.K GUPTA 2005)

Selection of pulley and belt
the important constant obtained is the belt slip =2% (ISO 4189 & ARPM IP-21A)

From the above diameter of pulley other identified constants that will help for further
calculations are: -

The type of belt used will be type-A (ISO 4189 & ARPM IP-21A)

Groove angle = 2β, for type A the grove angle is 34°. coefficient of frictions for type A is
μ=0.3 (for dry and rubber belt materials) (Khurmi & Gupta 2005) The materials used for
manufacturing of pulley is cast iron. (Khurmi & Gupta 2005)
Determination of linear velocity of belt

Theoretical linear velocity

From, V= ωr, but r=d/2 ,thus V1= = 7.855𝑚/𝑠

V1= = 7.855𝑚/𝑠

Calculated linear velocity

From V1 = (1 − 𝑠𝑙𝑖𝑝) × V, V1= (1 – 2%) × 7.855𝑚/𝑠

but, V1 = 7.67𝑚/𝑠

V2 = (1 – 2%) × 7.854𝑚/𝑠

V2= 7.69𝑚/𝑠

Therefore, linear velocity of belt (V) is 7.69m/s

Determination of belt length (Lb)

Lb= 2Cmin + (D2+D1) + (Khurmi & Gupta 2005)

Lb = 2x173 + (200+100) + = 831.68mm

The standard design length and particulars of the belt is 900mm(ISO 4189 & ARPM IP-21A)
Determination of force acting on the belt of driven pulley

From P = F x V
Where; P is Power (Watts), F is Force (N), V is Velocity (m/s)
Therefore; F = P/V
But, V=ωr = 78.55rad/sec x 0.1m
= 7.855 m/s
F = = 190.96 N
Therefore; the total force acting on belt of the driven pulley is 190.96N
Determination of number of belts required
From the equation Z = (R.S. KHURMI & J.K. GUPTA, Machine design 2005)
Where;
[p] = Cα x Cs
Po = Power transmitted by one belt under standard conditions
P = Allowable power per V-belt
Cα = Coefficient account for the effect angle at smaller pulley
Cs = Service factor that takes care of the type of drive
Cont...

depending on the belt, velocity of belt and smaller shear diameter i.e.
V = 5.89m/s is found between 5 to 10 meter/second.
Therefore, Po is obtained by interpolation,
5m/s 5.89m/s 10m/s

0.9 Kw Po 1.6Kw

Po=0.95+ = 1.09 Kw
α = 180 – 2sin-1
α = 180 – 2sin-1 = 173.13o
Cont..

Cα = 0.94 + = 0.94
P = Po x Cα x Cs
P = 1.09 x 0.9598 x 0.7 = 0.98Kw
Thus, Z = = 1.112 ≈ 1
Therefore, the number of belts required is 1
Designing of shaft

This shaft is subjected to combined twisting moment and bending moment, then on the basis of
the two moments simultaneously. Since the material of shaft is ductile (Mild Steel), Maximum
shear stress theory (Guest's theory) on basis of strength analysis

Designing consideration, Consider the figure below.

Cont.…

A B
Cont..

Where, W = weight of shaft = 0.6kg = 60N (literature review)

R1 = bearing support
R2 = bearing support
M.P = mass of pulley = 0.8Kg = 80N (J.K. GUPTA 2005)
M.D = mass of cutting disc = 300g = 0.3kg = 30N
Shear forces & bending moment diagram
Determination of bending moment of shaft and its diameter

Bending moment at A = 0

Bending Moment at B = 0

Bending Moment at entre = 0.35x60N = 21Nm downward

Bending moment at R2 = 0.59x144N = 85Nm upward

MBM = 85-21 = 64Nm

Thus, the maximum bending moment at center is 64Nm

Determination of shaft diameter

Determination of shaft diameter on basis of torque

On the basis of the torque, the equivalent twisting moment;

= 96.51Nm

Where; is twisting moment of the shaft.

T is torque transmitted by shaft.

Cont..

Kt=1 gradually applied load

Km=1.5 gradually applied load

Also, Twisting Moment; =

96.51 =

d = 11.7mm
Cont..

Is the maximum permissible shear stress for shaft

with allowance for keyways which is 42N/mm 2
The standard diameter size for transmission shaft starts with 25mm to 30mm and above.
Therefore, any diameter above 23.96mm is safe for the design. Hence the shaft diameter is taken
as 25mm.
Design of key

The material for the key was selected to be mild steel.

Considering the figure bellow

The key is subjected to two failures i.e. shearing and compression.

Let, Fc = Force due to compression

Fs = Shearing force due to the torque

Cont..

Key failure analysis due to shearing force

FS =

Where, T = Transmission torque (Nmm)

d = Shaft diameter (mm)
FS = Tangential force (N)

Shear stress,
Where; Length of the key
Cont..

Then from equation below

, allowable stress of key
the maximum allowable stress of the shaft equals to 72.45N/mm 2. Therefore, for safe design the
stress due to key should be less than the maximum allowable key stress (Khurmi & Gupta 2009)
Determination of the mass of machine
From, density = mass/volume

Mass = density x volume

volume = L x W x H = 1.0908 m3

= 1.0908 m3 x 7860 kg/m3

Therefore, the total mass is approximately 12 kg, which is portable to be carried from one

working station to another, thence portable machine
