Definition of Organic
Agriculture
IFOAM
Organic agriculture includes all
agricultural systems that promote the
environmentally, socially and
economically sound production of
food and fibers.
These systems take local soil fertility
as a key to successful production.
By respecting the natural capacity of
plants, animals and the landscape, it
aims to optimize quality in all aspects
of agriculture and the environment.
Organic agriculture dramatically
reduces external inputs by refraining
from the use of chemo-synthetic
fertilizers, pesticides and
pharmaceuticals.
Instead it allows the powerful laws of
nature to increase both agricultural
yields and disease resistance.
1. Environmentally, Organic Agriculture
socially and (key terms)
economically
sound and
sustainable
2. Based on Natural
and Local
conditions
3. Reduced external
inputs
4. Crop Rotations /
Intercropping
5. Resistant
Varieties
6. Biological Pest

7. Erosion Control

5. ICS Management
General Farm Management
1. Crop varieties in organic fields
must be different from crops
varieties in conventional fields.
2. Organic crops must be at the
minimum one meter away from
conventional crops.
3. If adjacent farms discharge
prohibited substances, the
organic field must establish
buffer crop to prevent
contamination either from drift or
from irrigation source. The crop
planted as buffer must be taller
than the adjacent crop. Product
from buffer crops cannot be
considered as organic.
General Farm Management
5. Clearing primary
forest for organic
farming is prohibited.
6. A minimum of 5% of
land shall be devoted
to biodiversity
conservation
General Farm Management
7. Annual crop has a minimum of
twelve (12) months as
conversion period. Annual
crop sown after conversion
period is organic crop.
8. Perennial crop has a minimum
of eighteen (18) months as
conversion period. Perennial
crop harvested after
conversion period is organic
crop.
9. All rice fields must be
converted to organic
production within twelve (12)
months after joining the
organic project.
Crop Production (Minimum Requirements)
1. Synthetic fertilizers are
prohibited
2. Synthetic insecticides
and herbicides are
prohibited
3. Synthetic hormone is
prohibited
4. Botanical pesticides
are allowed, except
tobacco juice and
rotenoid which are
Crop Production (Minimum
Requirements)
5. Spray equipments used
in conventional farming
shall not be used in
organic farming, unless
the sprayer is properly
washed
6. Farm equipments used in
conventional farming are
allowed to be used in
organic farming except
spray equipments
Crop Production (Minimum Requirements)
7. GMO seeds are
prohibited
8. Organic seeds and
seedlings are
required (if
available?)
9. Seeds shall not be
treated with
prohibited
pesticides before
sowing.
Crop Production (Minimum
Requirements)
10. Organic fertilization methods are
required (e.g. animal manure,
compost, green manure)
11. Night soil & human urine are
prohibited to be used as fertilizer
12. Animal manure from factory farm
is allowed
13. Manure from chicken farm raised
on the ground is allowed
14. Urban compost is allowed
15. External inputs are restricted
16. Use of branded name inputs (e.g.
organic compost, micro-
organism, etc.) is restricted,
except already being Certified
Organic by the Third Party
Crop Production (Minimum Requirements)
17. Burning of stalk and
straw is prohibited,
except for traditional
shifting cultivation or
when the materials
contains diseases &
pests
18. Salination and Soil
erosion measures are
required
19. Farmer must maintain
records of sources of
all farm inputs
Post Harvest Management
1. Bag and container
used for transporting
and storing organic
product must be
clean or new
2. Recycled synthetic
fertilizer bag is not
allowed
3. Spraying of
prohibited pesticides
in storage/warehouse
is prohibited
1. Farmer members must
participate in all activities ICS
2.
