IP Addressing Udemy Lesson 1
Addressing
Lesson 1: Basic understanding of IP addresses and their purpose
Why is IP Addressing important?
This type of communication is occurring at the Network Layer (Also called Host-to-Host
communication)
A host is a computer or a device that is taking part in the communication
When two distant hosts want to communicate with each other, usually the link is
established through the Internet, which means the data might pass through several
other networks before reaching the destination
To ensure that the data is delivered where it was supposed to, we needed a global
addressing scheme – which was latter known as IP Addressing
Types of IP Addresses
IPv4 Addresses have the length of 32 bits, which makes a total of addresses (around 4
Billion)
IPv6 Addresses are 128 bits in length, which is way more addresses than the previous
version ( = 340282366920938463463374607431768211456 Addresses)
The World is running out of IPv4 Addresses and we are transitioning to IPv6, which will
become dominant in the near future
