Where WBS & Scope fit
• Project idea

• Business case

• Project planning
- set objectives, assumptions, constraints
- WBS
- Scope
Remember Project -
Planning a big
trip……………
• Personal project
• You are going away with friends for a month:

European Inter rail

South American adventure
etc.
• You are in charge!
Consider all the aspects to the planning of this project.
Come up with several key headings and try & populate
the ‘activities’ required to plan a successful trip
Project: Planning a big
trip……………
• Destination
- schedule
- activities
• Travel
• Official
- passport
- visa
• Accommodation

• Health
- immunisations
- medications
- first aid
- emergency

• Money
- budget
- currency
Deconstruction
of a project
Work breakdown structure (WBS)
• Top down
• ‘chunking’
• ‘unbundling’
• Produces a linked, hierarchical series
of independent units
• Bottom level will be a list of work
packages/activities
Deconstruction
of a project
Work breakdown structure (WBS)
manageable units/activities means we
can:
• Gives people responsibility for each
manageable part
• Facilitates financial control
• Human resources can be assigned
• Allocating & tracking resources

Product focused planning
 Known as Product Based Structure (PBS)
 Some methods, e.g. PRINCE2™ consider the
breakdown as product-based
 Product-focused planning focuses on what is
to be achieved – deliverables, documented
as product descriptions

Summary: benefits of WBS
 Facilitates communication and co-
operation between project team
and stakeholders
 Provides a basis for estimating
resources, costs and time
 Feeds into developing the
precedence table and network
diagram (next week’s content)
 Basis of defining the scope
14
WBS Activities X 2
 Menti

15
Scope of a project

16
Project scope

 Defines the boundary of the project

 Identifies what is included in the project so it is
clear what the project will deliver
 It forms a baseline for the project with any
changes having to go through change
management
 It is used to measure the success of the project

17
Scope statement
 Scope is often defined by the work breakdown
structure (WBS) and will be equivalent to the
first level of the WBS.
 In addition, must also state specific exclusions,
so it is clear what the project will entail
e.g recruitment of operational staff, marketing

18
Writing the scope from the WBS
WBS Scope
 Start with a short
sentence on the
purpose of the project
 For each of the 4 sub-
projects, have a few
sentences to explain
what is happening in
that part of the project
 Do not list each activity
 Have a short section at
the end with exclusions
Project Scenario – The Big Food
Box

 In 2020, a single primary school in

Wales launched a social project to
help families & local communities.
 Now, with 70+ schools
participating, the initiative aims to
reduce food insecurity, enhance
food education, sustainability, and
foster community engagement.
Its working!

 Your job is to plan the project

School, Hatfield

 Youtube has some useful

videos on converting a
shipping container

 Independently note ideas

 Team meeting 1 or 2,
brainstorm together

 Show me a draft WBS

for feedback
