7
Ak keyboard is….

One of the primary input devices used with a computer.

Like an electric typewriter, a keyboard is composed of
buttons used to create letters, numbers, and symbols, and
perform additional functions.

The most keyboards use the QWERTY layout, there are still
designs that utilize the DVORAK layout.

Keyboard ports and interfaces

Today, most desktop computer

keyboards connect to the computer
using either USB or Bluetooth
for wireless communication.
Before USB, a computer used PS/2,
serial port, or AT (Din5) as a
keyboard interface.

15
The alphanumeric keys
Alphanumeric keys: These are used for typing letters, numbers and
notations into the computer. The various keys in the alphanumeric keys
are:

 Letter keys: The letter keys (A-Z) work like the typewriter. When the
letter keys are pressed alone, the lower case type appear on the
screen. When the keys are pressed while holding down the shift key,
the upper-case letter are produced.
 Spacebar key: The spacebar key adds a blank space between
characters, and it is the longest key on the keyboard

16
 Number keys: The number keys (0-9) work like those on a
typewriter. When any of these keys are pressed, the number
appears on the screen. When you hold down the shift key and
press the number, the upper symbol labelled on the key
appears.

 Symbol keys/notation keys: the symbol keys have two

symbols on them. The lower symbol is produced when the key
is pressed alone while the upper symbol is produced when the
key is pressed while holding down the shift key. Examples of
the symbol keys are #, $, %, (, ), [, ] etc.

17
 Caps lock keys: it is used to type in upper
case letter/capital letter.
 Shift key: it is used in combination with
another key to type an uppercase letter.
There are basically two shift keys on the
keyboard.
 Enter key: it shows the end of a line or entry.

18
 Backspace key: It moves the cursor one
space backward on the screen each time
it is pressed. It delete a character or
word from the back.
 Tab key: It causes the cursor on screen to
move a set of spaces.

19
NUMERIC KEYS/KEYPAD

Alternatively referred to as the 10-key, number pad, numeric

keyboard, numerical keypad, numpad, or ten key,
the numeric keypad is a 17-key keypad on the far-right side of
a PC keyboard. A numeric keypad may also be a separate device
that connects to a computer.

20
The keypad allows an individual to quickly input
numbers into a computer.
For example, the keypad is often used for anyone who
deals with numbers frequently or must perform
calculations with a software calculator.

21
Why do keyboards need a
numeric keypad?
The numeric keypad's layout makes it easier and faster to type
numbers and perform calculations than using the top keyboard
numbers.

For example, someone could type "486+123" and press enter

with one hand (the right hand) quickly. Without the numeric
keypad, the person would have to use both hands and most likely
look down at the keyboard.

22
Are there letters on the
keypad?

The keypad has no letters, it only

has numbers, and symbols.

23
Keyboard special keys
Special Keys: Some keys on the keyboard have specific
functions which you may not be familiar with.

Tab - move between items or move forward 5 characters

(depending on the task).

Shift - when the Shift key is pressed at the same time as a letter
key, an upper-case version of that letter is produced. For other
non-letter keys, this action produces the character that is above
the main character on the key.

24
Insert - pressing this key switches between two modes
when you are typing. In the first mode, what you type
appears before the cursor and pushes any text that comes
after it to the right. In the second mode, any text that you
type successively replaces any text that is to the right of
the cursor.

Print Screen - pressing the Print Screen key captures an

image of your entire screen. For more on this feature see
the section Print Screen under Other useful things...

25
Caps Lock - when you press the Caps Lock key, you
activate a feature that lets you type upper case letters
continuously without having to press the Shift key at the
same time. To go back to typing lower case letters, press
the Caps Lock key again. You should use Caps Lock
instead of shift if you want to type more than one or two
upper case letters in a row. Numbers and special keys are
not affected by the Caps Lock key.

26
Num Lock - When the Num Lock key is pressed, the
numbers on the number pad of the keyboard are
activated. When the Num Lock key is not pressed, it's the
arrows and special keys on the number pad which are
active.
The number pad is a block of numbers that looks like an
upside-down telephone keypad.

27
On desktop computer keyboards it is found on the right
hand side of the keyboard. On laptops, the number pad is
a special feature that is associated with regular keys on
the keyboard.
The numbers corresponding to the number pad can
usually be seen on the bottom edge of other keys (usually
ones on the right side of the keyboard).

28
How many special keys are
there
There arein
noa keyboard?
computer technology standards
that dictate the number of special keys to be
included on a keyboard.

On average, most keyboards have between 12

and 20 special keys.
