Introduction
Seismographs are instruments used to record the motion of
the ground during an earthquake. They are installed in the ground throughout the world and operated as part of a seismographic network. The earliest "seismoscope" was invented by the Chinese philosopher Chang Heng in A.D. 132. Scientists study earthquakes so we can understand them better and hopefully one day predict them so we can save thousands of lives. The purpose of seismograph • Seismometers allow us to detect and measure earthquakes by converting vibrations due to seismic waves into electrical signals, which we can then display as seismograms on a computer screen. • Seismologists study earthquakes and can use this data to determine where and how big a particular earthquake is. • A seismograph is an instrument that measures and documents vital information about earthquakes. • Seismographs are equipped with electromagnetic sensors that translate ground motions into electrical voltages. What is the principle of seismic instrument? • An instrument sensitive to tiny movements in the ground. A seismometer is a device that is sensitive to vibrations. • It works on the principle of a pendulum: a heavy, inert mass with a certain resistance to movement (i.e. inertia) due to its weight is suspended from a frame by a spring that allows movement. Background Earthquakes happen all the time, but most of them are so small that we can't feel them, and they don't cause any damage. Large earthquakes, however, can be catastrophic—causing significant damage to property and loss of life. An earthquake's strength is measured on what is called the Richter scale. The Richter scale goes from 1 to 10. Each increase of 1 on the Richter scale means the earthquake is actually 10 times more powerful As of 2019 the strongest earthquake ever recorded measured 9.5 on the Richter scale. Scientists use a machine called a seismograph to measure the motion of the ground during an earthquake. Seismographs are Materials •Medium-sized cardboard box •Paper or plastic disposable cup •String •Marker •Scissors •Paper or a very long printed receipt from a store •Tape •Coins, marbles, small rocks or other small, heavy objects to use as weights •Another person to help •Graphing paper Record Photo of Seismograph Result of Seismograph References
