One-to-one functions
A one- to - one function is a function where each input (x -
value) has a unique output (y - value). To put it another way,
every time we plug in a value of x we will get
a unique value of y, the same y - value will
never appear more than once. A one – to one function is
special because only one – to - one functions have an
inverse function.

A one – to – one function is a function in which for each

value of y in the range of f, there is just one value x in the
domain of f such that y = f(x). In other words, f is one – to –
One-to-one functions
●Example 1
●Determine if the function f = {(7, 3), (8, -5),
(-2, 11), (-6, 4)} is a one – to – one function.

●The function f is a one – to – one function
because each of the y – values in the ordered
pairs is unique; none of the y – value appear
more than once.
One-to-one functions

●Example 2
●Determine if the function h = {(–3, 8), (–11, –
9), (5, 4), (6, –9)} is a one – to - one function.

●The function h is not a one – to – one function
because the y – value of -9 is not unique; the
y – value of -9 appears more than once.
One-to-one functions
●Example 3
●The relation pairing an SSS member to his or
her SSS number.

●Each SSS member is assigned to a unique
SSS, thus, the relation is one – to – one –
function because two different member
cannot be assign to the same SSS number.

●Horizontal Line Test – The HLT

says that a function is a one – to
one function if there is no
horizontal line that intersects
the graph of the function at
more than one point
One-to-one functions
● Determine if the graph of
● f(x) = - x + 2 is a one – to –
one function using the
horizontal line test.

● In looking the graph, you
can see that any horizontal
line drawn on the graph will
intersect the graph of f(x)
only one. Therefore, f(x)
is a
● one – to – one function.
One-to-one functions
● Determine if the graph of
● g(x) = x4 – 4x is a
● one – to – one function
using the horizontal line
test.

● In looking the graph, you
can see that horizontal line
drawn on the graph will
intersect the graph of g(x)
more than one. Therefore,
g(x) is not a
● one – to – one function.
Inverse Functions
An inverse function is a function that
will “undo” anything that the original
function does
A relation reversing the process
performed by any function f(x) is called
inverse of f(x).
Suppose that f is a function. The inverse
relation, denoted by f-1 is an assignment

●STEPS IN FINDING THE INVERSE OF
A FUNCTION
●1. Replace f(x) with y.
●2. Interchange x and y.
●3. Solve for the new y from the
equation in step 2.
●4. Replace the new y with f-1(x) if the
inverse is a function.
