Target Markets
Marketing
Retailers dedicate lots of effort to finding out what the best market is for their
product. They think about the age of the consumer, what type of family they come
from, what they do for fun and even what type of job they have. They sometimes do
this by running focus groups or by asking customers to fill out surveys.
Have a quick think about these types of products and what type of person you think
the target market might be for each one:

A chocolate
An expensive
flavoured Dishwashing
wristwatch
cereal liquid

Focus groups - people who get paid to work in groups to

answer questions about products that they like and what
they like about them.
Entrepreneurs Throughout History
Walt Disney (5th December 1901 - 15th December 1966)
Disney is famous for creating one of the most recognised brands in history. He was not only a cartoonist but a great
businessman and innovator, always making sure he used the most up-to-date technology in his animation. For example, he
was the first to combine a cartoon with sound in ‘Steamboat Willie’, and also the first to release a cartoon in full colour. He
was well known for being an inspirational leader and making his employees ‘part of the story’.

“You can design and create, and build the most

wonderful place in the world. But it takes people
to make the dream a reality.”

Build a Business
 When you start a business and design a new product, you often
need to survey the market.
 This is to assess if people will be interested in your product,
how much they will pay for it and what improvements or
different things they would want it to have.
 Once you have your ideas, create a survey to gain feedback
about them. Include at least three different questions and try
to use a range of ways to ask and record the answers, e.g. a
tally chart, a table, yes or no questions and 5 Ws and 1 H
questions (who, what, where, when, why and how).
 When you are finished, choose either a histogram or a pie
chart to show your results. Try to make some summarising
statements about what the data is showing you.
REFLECTION
 Highlights
 Lowlights
 Suggestions
 Community collaboration: Conduct
a research for your brand to
identify your target market.
