Artificial intelligence and

machine learning applications
for crop yield forecasting
Introduction
• It's estimated that we'll need to produce 70% more food by 2050 to meet the needs of
the world's population.

• Farmers are under constant pressure to produce more food with fewer resources, and
they often don't have access to the latest technology or information while they face
increasing competition from abroad and rising production costs.

• Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) can help farmers overcome these
challenges. It can help increase crop yields while reducing production costs at farm level.

• AI algorithms use real-time data and visualize analytics to improve predictions about
which crops will thrive and where pests are likely to appear.
AI and Machine learning
• Artificial Intelligence • Machine Learning
• Proprietary AI algorithm for • High performance computing for
agribusiness agriculture
• High data granularity • Optimizing farming practices
• Reduce crop losses • Data-driven decision making
• Combat climate change • Yield forecast and estimation
• Mitigate crop deficiencies
Crop prediction model using AI and Machine
learning algorithms
Machine learning projects based on supervised learning are generally composed of three
phases or activities: (1) Data collection; (2) Training of the ML models; (3) Deployment of
the best performing model
Steps Involved

• Data collection

• Data pre-processing

• Prediction Model

• Visualization
Types of machine learning algorithms
• Regression algorithms are commonly used for predicting crop yields because
they are simple to understand and easy to implement. These algorithms use a
set of inputs (such as weather data, soil data, and management practices) to
predict the output (crop yield)
• Decision tree algorithms are also used for crop yield prediction. They use a tree-
like structure to model decisions and their potential consequences. The
algorithm starts by making a decision based on the most important input factor
and then continues to make additional decisions based on subsequent inputs.
The final result of the algorithm is a prediction of crop yield.
• Artificial neural networks are a more complex type of machine learning
algorithm that is modelled after the structure and function of the human brain.
They are particularly well suited for crop yield prediction because they can
handle large amounts of data and identify complex patterns and relationships.
Conclusion
• The importance of crop yield forecasting for food security is expected to
increase as the global population grows and extreme weather events such as
droughts, heat waves, and large storms become more frequent or more
intense due to climate change. Several approaches have been used to predict
crop yield such as field surveys, crop models, remote sensing, traditional
statistical models, and more recently, machine learning algorithms. Machine
learning approaches by themselves or combined with other approaches such
as crop modeling and remote sensing have shown promising results and can
improve the accuracy of crop yield prediction at the field and regional
levels. The application of artificial intelligence in agriculture is very promising
and expected to increase in the next few years. We can expect improved crop
yield forecasting based on artificial intelligence approaches as more data
become available and the technology evolves.
