Eye Health Screening & Survey Plan
Study Title
• Assessments of Visual Acuity and Color Vision Status among
High School Students in Yangon
Research Questions
1. What is the proportion of vision impairment among high
school students?
2. What is the proportion of color vision deficiency among high
school students?
3. What are the factors associating visual acuity and color
vision status among high school students?
Aim
• To study the status of visual acuity and color vision among
high school students in Yangon
Objectives
1. To describe the demographic characteristics of high school students
2. To determine the proportion of vision impairment among study
population
3. To determine the proportion of color vision deficiency among study
population
4. To find out the factors associating visual acuity and color vision
status among study population
Study Design
• School Based Cross Sectional Descriptive Study

• From 21.10.2024 to 8.11.2024 (3 Weeks)

Study Area
Basic Education High Schools resided at the following 8
townships
1. Mingalardon township, 6. Twantay township,
2. Tikkyi township, 7. Kyauktan township,
3. Hmawbi township, 8. Thanlyin township
4. Hlegu township,
5. Hlaing Taryar township,
Study Population
• High School Students (Grade 9, 10 & 11) from eight
townships at Yangon
Sample Size
• Total of 800 students
• 100 students (Grade 9, 10 & 11) from each township
Selection Criteria
Inclusion Criteria
All students from Grade 9, 10 & 11 of both sex, who are
attending at school at the time of data collection, will be invited
to participate.
Exclusion Criteria
Students who meet any of the following criteria will be
excluded -
1. Student who are not from Grade 9, 10 and 11
2. Student who is absent at the day of data collection
3. Student who suffers recent any eye infection (eg.,
Conjunctivitis)
4. Student who has known congenital eye disease (eg.,
anophthalmia)
Research Procedures
1. Eye Health Survey by using questionnaires
2. Assessment of visual acuity by using Landolt C Chart
3. Assessment of Color vision by using Ishihara Plates
Detailed Research Procedures
• Firstly, permission to conduct the survey will be taken from
the respective authorized persons (school headmaster,
class teacher).
• After getting the permission, students who are eligible for
inclusion criteria will be invited to participate in the study.
• After getting informed consent, demographic data and questions
related to eye health status of participants will be collected by face
to face interview method by using questionnaires (Eye Health
Survey Form). (Survey form will be provided in Annex.)
• The visual acuity status of participants will be examined by using
Landolt C method. (The detail procedure for visual acuity
assessment will be provided in Annex.)
• Then color vision assessment will be done by using Ishihara Test.
(The detail procedure for Ishihara Test will be provided in Annex.)

Data Collection and Management
Data Collection
• All data will be collected by using quantitative data
collection technique.
• Demographic data and questions related to eye health
status of participants will be collected by face to face
interview method by using eye health survey form. All
information on survey form will be explained by
interviewers in Myanmar Language.
• Assessment of visual acuity will be conducted by
applying Landolt C method.
• Examination of color vision impairment will be assessed
by using Ishihara Color Plates.
• All the findings for visual acuity and color vision
assessments will be recorded with pro forma.
Data Management
• Data entry will be done using Epi-data 3.1 version. To minimize human
errors and for better validation, range check and other measures will also
be done.
• Data will be summarized by using frequency distribution tables and cross
tables.
• Data analysis will be done by using STATA version 15.0 and SPSS version
22. Categorical data will be organized with frequency and percentage
and numerical data will be summarized with mean, SD and 95% CI.
Appropriate parametric and non parametric statistical tests will be
applied to determine the association between variables. The p-value (less
than 0.05) will be assumed as statistically significant.
