1 Composition of matter Lesson Plan

Learning objectives:
Describe what a compound is and how it differs from an element,
Identify the number of atoms/elements a molecule is composed
Scaffolder practice (You do)
Think-pair-share activity about examples of mixtures .

Lesson goalsand contrast colloids, solutions, and suspensions.
I will move around and provide feedback
1- Identify mixtures. Answer given questions and play game about classification of matter
2- I can differentiate between heterogeneous mixture and
homogeneous mixture.
3- Differentiate between solution ,colloid and suspension.

Vocabulary Checking for understanding

Substance- element – compound – suspension – colloid – Use the book page 384 to answer the questions (1-5)
Tyndall effect – homogeneous mixture – heterogeneous
mixture – solution.
Extension Task
Starter: Research a common compound, write a brief report on its uses.
:Answer the “Getting started” slide in power point
Start with a brief discussion about what elements and compounds
are. Ask students to give examples of each.
. Introduce mixtures through different types of mixtures then have Plenary
elicitation to the types of mixtures.
Instruction and Modelling (I do/We do) Students will evaluate their own understanding using traffic
Discuss mixtures and types of mixtures, use visuals to illustrate lights
the types of mixtures and analyse them.
Classify different substances into heterogeneous and
homogeneous mixtures.
Perform an experiment to distinguish solution, colloids and
suspension

Lesson Objectives

• Identify elements and compounds.

• Explain how solutions, colloids, and suspensions are related.

• Classify pure substances and mixtures.

Starter
Substances
• Matter is anything that takes up space
and has mass.
introduction

• A substance is a pure substance that has

a fixed composition.

• A substance can be an element or

compound.
Substances

• All substances are built from atoms.

introduction

• An element is a substance made up of

atoms that are all alike.

• Copper and nitrogen are examples of

elements.

• There about 90 naturally occurring

elements.
Substances

• A compound is a substance in which the

introduction

atoms of two or more elements are

chemically combined in a fixed proportion.

• Water and table salt are examples of

compounds.

Independent

• Discussion:
• Identify which mixtures are homogeneous and which are heterogeneous
just by looking at them.
• Then explain your reasoning
Mystery Mixture Challenge: Identifying Homogeneous and
Starter task Heterogeneous Mixtures (g) 5 min

• Your answers Should include:

• 1. Identifying the Mixtures:
• Sand and Salt: Heterogeneous Mixture
Independent

• Oil and Water: Heterogeneous Mixture

• Sugar and Water: Homogeneous Mixture
• 2. Reasoning:
• Heterogeneous Mixture: The components are not uniformly distributed and can be seen separately (e.g.,
grains of sand in salt, oil floating on water).
• Homogeneous Mixture: The mixture appears uniform throughout, and individual components cannot be
distinguished (e.g., sugar dissolved in water).

Independent Answer the following Questions: (g) 3 min
Mixtures
• Many salad dressings are mixtures of oil,
vinegar, and seasoning.
introduction

• A mixture is matter composed of two or more

substances that can be separated by physical
means.

• A heterogeneous mixture is a mixture in which

different materials remain distinct.

• A green salad containing different vegetables is

an example of a heterogeneous mixture.
introduction
Mixtures
• A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture
made of liquid and solid particles that settle.
introduction

• A colloid is a heterogeneous mixture with

particles that never settle. Paint, milk, fog, and
smoke are examples of colloids.

• A beam of light passes through a solution, but

the light is scattered in a colloid.

• The scattering of a light beam as it passes

through a colloid is call the Tyndall effect.
introduction
Homogeneous mixtures
• A homogeneous mixture is a mixture that
remains constantly and uniformly mixed and
introduction

has particles that are so small that they

cannot be seen with a microscope.

• Soft drinks that have carbonation are

heterogenous mixtures. Flat soft drinks are
homogeneous mixtures.

• A solution is the same thing as a

homogeneous mixture.
Homogeneous mixtures
The concept map shows that mixtures can be either
heterogeneous or homogeneous. Pure substances

can be elements or compounds.
