CORRELATION
COEFFICIENT
The total knowledge score was significantly correlated with positive attitude toward self-
regulation (r = .54), but not with observed behavior.

However, there was a strong negative relationship (r = -.68) between number of arguments
and relationship satisfaction.

APPLICATION OF
MEASURES OF
CENTRAL TENDENCY AND
• In groups of 2 to 4, go to the In-Class Exercises section of the module and click on the

P-VALUES
“Example Experimental Research Report 2.”
• First, skim the introduction and methods sections to get a sense of what this study is about.
Then go to the results section. Some of these statistics you will not be able to understand
unless you’ve already had a stats class. But some you can.
• What can you tell about the hypothesis testing from the measure of central tendency and p-
values? What else do you recognize?
APPLICATION OF
CORRELATION
• Get in groups of 2 to 4, go to the In-Class Exercises section of the
Module and look at the “Sample Survey Research Report.”
– Skim the introduction and methods section to remind yourself of the purpose of the
study.
– Read the method section and then look at the table after the references. What is this type
of table called? What information can you get from the table?
– Are the relationships positive or negative?
– What would a graph look like (approximately) for each? (For ideas looks at the example articles
posted in the module.)
– Identify all of the statistics we’ve discussed so far.
– Explain the meaning of the second-to-last paragraph.
