So, what do you
think is our lesson
for today?
Our lesson for today is
about “Principal
Roots and its
Nature (Rational or
Irrational)”
Objectives:

At the end of the lesson, the students will be

able to:
a.Describe what a principal root is.
b.Determine whether a principal root is rational
or irrational.
c.Value accumulated knowledge as means of
new understanding.
Definition
Principal Root is a number which produces a specific quantity
when multiplied by itself. It is the positive root of a number.
 A Perfect Square is the square of a rational number.

Rational Number is a number that can be expressed in the

form where and are integers, and is not equal to zero.
Irrational Number is a number whose decimal representation
is neither terminating nor repeating. This number cannot be
expressed as quotient of integers.
ACTIVITY
Instruction: Using a scientific calculator (or
android phone), input the following and get the
equivalent value.
NOTE

 When a Principal Root is a whole number or fractions, then

the Principal Root is described as Rational.

 When a Principal Root is non-terminating or non-repeating

decimal number, then the Principal Root is described as
Irrational.
RATIONAL PERFECT SQUARES
NUMBER
Perfect Squares are numbers that have
GIVEN PRODUCT
Rational numbers as Principal Roots.

1
Taking the Principal Root of a number is like
doing the reverse operation of squaring a
4 number.
9 Examples:
16 • when then
• when then
25
• when then
• when then

Hence, the Principal Root of all Perfect Squares are

Rational.
IRRATIONAL
NUMBER
NOT PERFECT SQUARES
Not perfect squares are numbers that have
Irrational numbers as Principal Roots.

Examples:
• .41421356237

Since there is no number that can multiply by itself that

will give the exact answer, hence, the Principal Root of all
Not Perfect Squares are Irrational Number.
LET’S PRACTICE!

Instruction: Determine the Principal Root of the

given number then determine also whether the
Principal Root is Rational or Irrational.
QUIZ

A. Determine the Principal Root of the given number then

determine also whether the Principal Root is Rational or
Irrational.
QUIZ
B. Based on your understanding of the lesson, complete the following
sentences.
1. A real number has a ____________________________ that can be describe as
Rational or Irrational.
2. The square of Rational Number is considered
________________________________.
3. When a number is perfect square, then its Principal Root is
_______________________________.
4. When the Principal Root of a number is no-terminating or non-repeating
decimal, then that Principal Root is described as _________________________.
5. When extracting the Principal Root of a real number, it can be described
as either __________________________ or ___________________________.
