Illumination
Illumination:-
The distribution of light on horizontal surface is called illumination.
Illumination is measured in foot candles .

square foot area.
1 foot candle =10.76 lux
Measurement of light or illumination:-
*A lumen(the amount of light) is a measurement of light output
from a light source.
*All lamps are rated in lumens.
*A measurement of a 100 watt incandescent lamp is about 1750
lumens.
*Lux is the measure of illumination level at or on the
surface that is being illuminated.
Uses of Light
The use of light is determined depending on the type of work
to be performed.
2.Identification: It is
important to focus on pipes

Incandescent light:-
Light is produced by heating any material, usually metal at a
temperature at which it glows.
Filament – tungsten
Glass- heat resistant
Fluorescent light:-
Fluorescent lights are luminescent or cold .
There are of two types-low pressure lamp and high pressure lamp.
This categorisation is based on the pressure inside the tube.
Difference between incandescent and
fluorescent lights
Incandescent Fluorescent
Installation cost Low High
Produces glare and Yes Not much
shadow

• The light source illuminates
the target surface passing
through another medium.
28
• The light from the
light sources diffuses
in 360° spread onto
the target surface.

1. Valance Lighting
• Horizontal fluorescent
tube is placed behind
the valance board
casting upward light
which reflects off the
ceiling and then down.
33
•Installed at the
ceiling and directs
the light
downwards only.
34
• Consists of placing a

placed on one or more walls
of a room about 12 inches
