Types 3 Lighting

At the end of this lecture the student will

be able to:
• Mention the uses of light
• Discuss the importance of lighting
• Classify lights
Conte
nt
•Uses of Light
• Importance of Light
• Classify lights based on source
What is

light
• Light is a form of energy without which there can be no
vision.
• When light strikes an object ,it may be reflected
absorbed or allowed to pass through.
Illumination

Illumination:-
The distribution of light on horizontal surface is called illumination.
Illumination is measured in foot candles .
A foot candle is defined as a lumen of light distributed over one
square foot area.
1 foot candle =10.76 lux
Measurement of light or illumination:-
*A lumen(the amount of light) is a measurement of light output
from a light source.
*All lamps are rated in lumens.
*A measurement of a 100 watt incandescent lamp is about 1750
lumens.
*Lux is the measure of illumination level at or on the
surface that is being illuminated.
Uses of Light
The use of light is determined depending on the type of work
to be performed.

1.Safety: A light source is important in stairways ,lifts and

elevators in order to avoid accidents.
Uses of Light

2.Identification: It is
important to focus on pipes
carrying hot water and steam.

3.Warmth:
A light source is used in kitchen
above the counter in order to
keep plates and dishes warm.
Uses of Light

4.Beauty/decorative:
These are used for decorative
purposes also which improves eye
appeal, especially when focused on
sculptures, painting etc.
Importance of Lighting
Importance of Lighting
Importance of Lighting
• It has a definite emotional effect & is stimulating.
• Lightning plays both a functional & Aesthetical role in a
hotel.
• It enhance the guest experience.
• It changes the mood of a room.
• Artificial light can produce harmonious effect throughout
the room.
• It brings out ambience & Quality of experience in the hotel.

Classification of Lights-
Based on the Source
Cont’d….

 Natural Lighting:- The sun is the biggest

source of natural light. Natural light has the
advantage of being freely available not involving any
expenditure and consuming less energy.

20
Incandescent light:-
Light is produced by heating any material, usually metal at a
temperature at which it glows.
Filament – tungsten
Glass- heat resistant
Fluorescent light:-
Fluorescent lights are luminescent or cold .
There are of two types-low pressure lamp and high pressure lamp.
This categorisation is based on the pressure inside the tube.
Difference between incandescent and
fluorescent lights

Variety Different wattage Very few variations
Use Decorative . Task/ general lighting
Used with different
types of shades.
Based on the way light is directed on
an object

• The light source directly

illuminates the target
surface without
passing through any
other Medium the
surface.

27
• The light source illuminates
the target surface passing
through another medium.

28
• The light from the
light sources diffuses
in 360° spread onto
the target surface.

29
30
Retroreflective sheeting

Retro reflective material is made using tiny glass

beads which reflect light directly back toward its
source, from a much wider angle than reflective
material. Traffic signs and pavement markings are
retro reflective. 31
Methods of
Lighting
• 1.Architectural & Built in Lightning : * Valance lighting
* Cornice Lighting
* Cove Lighting
* Track Lighting
* Soffit Lighting

2.Non- Architectural Lightning : * Ceiling Fixture

* Wall fixture
* Portable

32
1. Valance Lighting

• Horizontal fluorescent
tube is placed behind
the valance board
casting upward light
which reflects off the
ceiling and then down.

33
•Installed at the
ceiling and directs
the light
downwards only.

34
• Consists of placing a
continuous series of
fluorescent tubes in a grove
placed on one or more walls
of a room about 12 inches
from the ceiling .

35
•This refers to the
underside panel
of a built-in light
source.

36
37
Interesting fact

• Light is actually energy made of small particles called photons.

• Meanwhile, photons, protons, and electrons were all crashing into

each other, too. When protons and electrons meet, they
form hydrogen, releasing light. This is how the first light in the
universe was born, about 380,000 years after the Big Bang

• Uses of light.
• Lights based on different factors.
• Fluorescent light component
Summary

•Light has a definite emotional effect and can be very

stimulating.
• Lighting thus plays both a functional and aesthetic role
in a hotel.
• Effective lighting has been a focus for improving the
aesthetics of a hotel for quite some time now.
