CHALLENGES IN INTERCULTURAL

COMMUNICATION
1
The idea that intercultural miscommunication arises from language
differences among speakers has gained traction. is a result of the
differences in cognitive patterns between individuals from various
nations and cultures. They have distinct worldviews. The phrase,
which is also occasionally referred to as "cross-cultural
communication," considers customary social practices, various
nterpretations of symbols, and disparate values and beliefs. It is true
that cultural diversity and a lack of common knowledge and ideas
make it more difficult to draw the right conclusions or interpret
meanings. On the other hand, one could also contend that English has
become the universal language. English has actually been designated
as ASEAN's official or working language as a result of the region's
unity. Hence, using only one language to be

As a sign of community, these particular varieties have been greatly

impacted by us and their speakers. The issue of misunderstandings is not
obvious and can be caused by 199 controlled turn-taking, non-aligned, and
disturbances, according to recent investigations. In her study of participants
from 17 different first language backgrounds, the author (2016) highlights
that communication in English as a lingua franca, or EL, is "a form of
intercultural communication characterized by cooperation rather than
misunderstanding." The study's findings showed that the participants
exhibited communicative behavior not typically associated with their
linguacultural backgrounds, making the talk cooperative.

Greetin
Like handshakes, greetings rituals also vary from culture to
gs
culture. Japanese women bow directly from japanese men. The
German bow, which is termed as diener, means a bow to and in
recognition of an authority. Thus, when a person bows, hel she is
actually sending the message "at your service."
SOURCES OF MISUNDERSTANDING
Kaur (2016) cites the following as the sources of
misunderstanding:
1. Ambiguity - lack of explicitness on the part of the speakerin the
form of problematic reference and ambiguous semantis in which
an utterance is open to different interpretations

2. Performance-related misunderstanding - slips of the tongue and mishearing,

which may be due to utterances spoken quickly and unclearly
3, Language-elated misunderstanding - ungrammaticality of sentences
4. Gaps in world knowledge - gaps in content rather than language
5. Local context - turns and the turns within sequences produced by the
participants themselves, and the orientation of the participants, as well as the
repair moves that follow the displayed understanding
Methods for Investigating Intercultural TRANSMISSION Why 5 is it
important to comprehend cross-cultural communication? People
belong to numerous cultures, which makes it easy to argue that
understanding others is necessary. It's easier said than done, though.
Some individuals take it for granted to learn about and research a
nation's history before visiting the location. To prevent upsetting
people, it is important to be aware of and mindful of various cultures,
particularly those you will be visiting. Miscommunication arises from
misinterpretations. Similarly, you should educate yourself about
cultural identities and origins because doing so will extend your
perspective. All cultures are equal, and even if they can be challenging
to comprehend, you must realize that none of them is better or

APPROACHES TO STUDYING
INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION
Why is there a need to understand intercultural
communication? It is easy to say that people
belong to diverse cultures, hence, the need to
understand others. However, it is easier said
than done. Some people take reading about and
studying first a country's culture before they go
and travel to the place for granted
There is a need to be aware or conscious of other
cultures, especially those that you will visit so that you
can avoid offending people. Due to misinterpretations,
miscommunication occurs. Likewise, you should
become aware of cultural identities and backgrounds
as they will broaden your horizon. All cultures are
equal, and though sometimes difficult to understand,
you need to understand that no culture is superior or
inferior to another. It is only through awareness that
you get to compare other cultures with your own and
appreciate cultural diversities and learn to live with
them. People have different languages, lifestyles, and
ways of thinking, speaking, and behaving. This is the
essence of cultural diversity.
