Networks
What more can you do
with computers?
You can access files found on a computer
using another computer. This is possible by
connecting the computer together using wired
cables. When computers are connected
together they are called a Network, Computer
Network.

Computer networks connect nodes like

computers, routers, and switches using
cables, fiber optics, or wireless signals. These
connections allow devices in a network to
communicate and share information and
resources.
Computer Network?

A computer The wired or wireless connection of two or more

computers for the purpose of sharing data and resources
form a computer network. Today, nearly every digital device
belongs to a computer network.

In an office setting, you and your colleagues may share

access to a printer or to a group messaging system. The
computing network that allows this is likely a LAN or local
area network that permits your department to share
resources.
How Does the Internet Work?

Networks follow protocols, which define

how communications are sent and
received. These protocols allow devices
to communicate. Each device on a
network uses an Internet Protocol or IP
address, a string of numbers that
uniquely identifies a device and allows
other devices to recognize it.
Modem
To connect to the internet
the primary piece of
hardware you need is a
modem.
Your ISP may give you a
modem—often for a fee—
when you sign a contract,
which helps ensure that you
have the right type of
modem. However, if you
would prefer to shop for a
better or less expensive
modem, you can choose to
buy one separately.
Router
A router is a hardware
device that allows you to
connect several computers
and other devices to a
single Internet connection,
which is known as a home
network. Many routers are
wireless, which allows you
to create a home wireless
network, commonly known
as a Wi-Fi network.

Using the
Internet
How Does the Internet Work?

The internet is actually a network of

networks that connects billions of digital
devices worldwide. Standard protocols
allow communication between these
devices. Those protocols include
hypertext transfer protocol (the ‘http’ in
front of all website addresses). Internet
protocol (or IP addresses) are the unique
identifying numbers required of every
device that accesses the internet.
There are a couple of terms you need to be familiar with
about websites.
● Hyperlinks: Many of Websites often have links to other sites,
also called hyperlinks. These are often parts of the text on the
website. They are usually colored blue, and sometimes they
are underlined or bold. If you click the text, your browser will
load a different page. Web authors use hyperlinks to connect
relevant pages. This web of links is one of the most unique
features of the Internet, lending to the old name World Wide
Web
● URL: Each website has a unique address, called a URL. You'll
notice that when you click a link, the URL changes as your
browser loads a new page. If you type a URL in the address bar
in your browser, your browser will load the page associated
with that URL. It's like a street address, telling your browser

Benefiting
from the
Internet
One of the best features of the Internet is the ability to
communicate almost instantly with anyone in the world.
Email is one of the oldest and most universal ways to
communicate and share information on the Internet, and
billions of people use it. Social media allows people to
connect in a variety of ways and build communities
online.

There are many other things you can do on the Internet

too. There are thousands of ways to keep up with news
or shop for anything online. You can pay your bills,
manage your bank accounts, meet new people, watch TV
, or learn new skills. You can learn or do almost anything
online.
Website

Most information on the

Internet is on websites.
A website is a collection of
related text, images, and
other resources. Websites
can resemble other forms of
media—like newspaper
articles or television
programs—or they can be
interactive in a way that's
unique to computers.
Web
Browser
A web browser allows you to
connect to and view websites.
The web browser itself is not
the Internet, but it displays
pages on the Internet. Each
website has a unique address.
By typing this address into
your web browser, you can
connect to that website and
your web browser will display
it.
What are emails?

Email was actually invented before the

publicly accessible internet as we know it.
Email was conceived as a means for
computers to communicate with one another.
From the early 1960s the computer network
ARPANET, a computer communications
network created by United States Department
of Defense developed a system of email
transfers that relied upon the now familiar
"@" sign.
How Does emails Work?

Sending an email is just like sending a

letter to a friend. Let’s say
[email protected] sends an email to
her friend [email protected]. The
email gets sent first to an outgoing mail
server (SMTP) whose job, just like that of
the post office, is to transport emails.
