Problem
Statement

Indoor plants require consistent care

to thrive, but many people struggle to
provide the appropriate conditions for
their plants due to busy schedules or
lack of knowledge. The challenge is to
create a system that monitors the
plant's environment and provides
actionable insights to help users
maintain optimal conditions for plant
health.
PROPOSED SOLUTION-

Develop a Smart Indoor Plant Monitoring

System using a Raspberry Pi that tracks
and manages the environmental
conditions of indoor plants. The system
will monitor factors like soil moisture,
temperature, humidity, and light levels,
and will send notifications and
recommendations to the user via a mobile
app or web interface.
Existing problem
•Manual Monitoring: Current methods of indoor plant care rely heavily
on manual monitoring, which can be inconsistent and labor-intensive.
•Lack of Knowledge: Many users lack the knowledge to understand
what their plants need or how to interpret environmental data.
•Inconsistent Conditions: Indoor plants often suffer from inconsistent
watering and varying light conditions due to irregular human
intervention.
TECHNICAL
APPROACH
1.Sensors and Hardware:
1. Soil Moisture Sensor: Measures the moisture level of the soil to determine if watering is
needed.
2. Temperature Sensor: Monitors the ambient temperature around the plant.
3. Humidity Sensor: Measures the relative humidity in the plant’s environment.
4. Light Sensor: Gauges the light intensity to ensure the plant is receiving adequate light.
2.Raspberry Pi Configuration:
1. Model: Raspberry Pi 4 or Raspberry Pi Zero W.
2. Connectivity: Use Wi-Fi to send data to the cloud and receive commands.
3. Programming: Python for interfacing with sensors and handling data.
3.Data Management:
1. Database: Use SQLite or Firebase for storing sensor data and user preferences.
2. Data Processing: Python scripts to analyze data and trigger notifications based on
predefined thresholds.
Front End
1.Mobile App / Web Interface:
1. Features: Real-time data display (moisture, temperature, humidity, light), historical data graphs,
notifications, and recommendations.
2. Frameworks: Use React Native for a cross-platform mobile app or React.js for a web application.
3. Design: Simple and intuitive UI/UX to make it easy for users to monitor and manage their plants.
Back End
2.Server and API:
1. Server: Node.js or Flask to handle requests from the front end and process data.
2. API: RESTful API to interact with the mobile app/web interface and fetch/update data.
3. Notifications: Use services like Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) to send push notifications.
3.Cloud Integration:
1. Cloud Storage: Use AWS S3 or Google Cloud Storage for storing images or logs.
2. Data Analytics: Implement basic analytics to provide insights on plant care patterns.

FEASIBILITY

1.Technical Feasibility:
1. Raspberry Pi is capable of handling sensor data collection and
communication.
2. Integration with mobile and web platforms is achievable with current
technology.
2.Cost Feasibility:
1. Hardware Costs: Sensors and Raspberry Pi components are relatively
inexpensive.
2. Software Costs: Most tools and platforms used are open source or have
free tiers.
3.Development Time:
1. Prototype: 2-3 months for developing and testing the initial prototype.
2. Full Deployment: Additional 1-2 months for refining and deploying the
final version.
VIABILITY

1.Market Demand:
1. Growing interest in smart home technology and indoor gardening provides a strong market for this solution.
2. Potential to expand into advanced features like automated watering or integration with other smart home
systems.
2.User Adoption:
1. Ease of Use: The system simplifies plant care, which can attract busy professionals or novice gardeners.
2. Value Proposition: Provides convenience and helps users keep their plants healthy, potentially leading to
higher adoption rates.
3.Scalability:
1. The system can be scaled to monitor multiple plants or integrated with other smart devices.
2. Future enhancements could include AI-based recommendations or integration with other IoT platforms.
IMPACTS AND BENEFITS
•Enhanced Plant Health:
•Consistent Care: By providing real-time monitoring and automated alerts, the
system ensures that indoor plants receive consistent care, leading to healthier
and more resilient plants.
•Prevention of Over/Under Watering: Accurate soil moisture readings help
prevent common issues related to over or under watering, reducing plant stress
and potential disease.
•Educational Value:
•Learning Tool: The system can educate users about optimal plant care
practices, including ideal moisture levels, light requirements, and temperature
ranges. This knowledge can be applied to broader gardening practices.
•Increased Accessibility:
•Broader Audience: The technology makes indoor gardening accessible to
people who may not have a green thumb or who lack time to monitor plant
conditions manually.
•Inclusivity: The system can benefit individuals with physical disabilities or
mobility issues who may find traditional plant care challenging.
•Efficient Resource Use: By optimizing watering and environmental conditions, the
system contributes to water conservation and reduces waste.
•Promotion of Green Living: Encourages more people to grow indoor plants, which
can improve indoor air quality and contribute to a greener lifestyle.
•Market and Economic Impact:
•Job Creation: The development and support of the system may create job
opportunities in areas such as software development, customer support, and
marketing.
•Business Opportunities: Potential for commercialization and expansion into related
markets, such as smart home devices and garden automation.
