PROBLEM

A single-phase AC supply has a voltage of 230 V at 50 Hz and a feeder (source)

impedance of 1.0 Ω resistance and 4.0 Ω inductive reactance. It feeds a single-
phase load having ZL=30 Ω. Calculate
(a) The voltage drop across the source impedance and
(b) the voltage across the load.
If a PWM-based is used to raise the voltage to the input voltage (230 V) with
minimum rating, then calculate
(c) the voltage rating of the compensator
(d) the current rating of the compensator, and
(e) the reactive power injected by of the compensator

20/10/2024 2
GIVEN:
VS = 230 V
Frequency of the supply (f)= 50 Hz
Load impedance, ZL = 30 Ω = 30 ∠ 0˚ Ω
Zs = (1+ j4) Ω = 4.12 ∠ 75.96° Ω
Total impedance, ZS+ ZL= 1 +j4+30 = 31+ j4=31.25 <7.35° Ω
Load current before compensation, IL = VS /(ZS+ZL) =230 ∠ 0°/(31.25<7.35°)
IL = 7.36 ∠ -7.35° A
Supply current, IS= IL= 7.36 ∠ -7.35° A

20/10/2024 3
SOLUTION

a) Voltage drop across the source impedance:

VZs = ZS*IS
= 4.12 ∠ 75.96° * 7.36 ∠ -7.35° = 30.32 ∠ 68.61˚ V

b) Voltage across the load:

VL = ZL*IL
= 30 ∠ 0° * 7.36 ∠ -7.35° = 220.8 ∠ -7.35° V

Reactive power balance, |VS||I’L| sin γ = |I’L|2 * XS

230 * 7.67 sin γ = 7.672 * 4
sin γ = 0.13339
γ = 7.65°

Active power balance = |VS||I’L| cos γ = |I’L|2 * RS + |I’L|2 * RL - |VSSSC|*|I’L|

230 * 7.67 cos(7.65°) = 7.672 * 1 + 7.672 * 30 - |VSSSC|*7.67
|VSSSC|= 9.51 V which is the voltage rating of the compensator (c)

d) Current rating of the compensator:

|ISSSC| =|I’L| = 7.67 A

e) Reactive power injected by the compensator:

|VSSSC|*|ISSSC| = 9.51*7.67 = 72.94 VA

Question: A single-phase AC supply has AC mains voltage of 230 V at 50 Hz and a feeder (source) impedance of 0.25 Ω
resistance and 4.0 Ω inductive reactance. It feeds a load having ZL = (20 – j15) Ω.

Calculate

(a) the voltage drop across the source impedance and

(b) the voltage across the load.

If a PWM SSSC (as shown in Figure a) is used to raise the voltage to the input voltage (230 V) with minimum rating,
calculate

(c) the magnitude of voltage injected by the compensator,

(d) the magnitude of injected current by the compensator

(e) Amount of VA injected by the Compensator.

(20 – j15) Ω
(0.25 + j4) Ω
b) Phasor diagram under compensation c) Waveforms under compensation
GIVEN:
Vs = 230 Vrms
f = 50 Hz

ZL = (20 – j15) Ω = 25∠-36.86º Ω

Zs = (0.25 + j4) Ω = 4∠86.42º Ω

Circuit calculations before compensation
ZT = ZL + Zs = (20 – j15) + (0.25 + j4) Ω = (20.25 – j11) Ω = 23.0447∠-

The voltage drop across the source impedance is

VZs =
=
= -16.8635 + j 36.271 V

b) the voltage drop across the Load terminals

The voltage drop across the load is

VL = L

= 290. - j12.451 V
= 290.97∠-2.45 º V
• The series-connected PWM SSSC is used to control the load terminal voltage to the input
voltage(230 V).

The magnitude of load current under feeder drop compensation is

= 9.2 A
c) the voltage rating of compensator

The supply current and the load current are same for the given network:
I´L = I´s.

From phasor diagram it can be observed that the SSSC absorbs both active and reactive powers from
the system. The power balance equations are used to calculate effective power factor angle β and
magnitude of the injected voltage.

The active power balance is expressed as

S L

Similarly, the reactive power balance is expressed as

S C
c) The voltage rating of compensator

d) the current rating of compensator

e) Amount of VA injected by the Compensator
