Link Building In 2024

Prioritize Quality > Quantity!

Prioritize Choice & Options!

Build Naturally – Stop Triggers, Flags & Penalties!

What Has Google Changed?

• Link Authority >>>

• Entity (Trust Signals) >>>

• More Links Are Now Neutralized Than Toxic

• More Internal Linking Equity

Root (Domain) Authority

• The higher DR = the higher avg. rank

• Always aim to become an authority (in your niche/country)

• Google will continue using it as the default guard against spam and bad actors, even in SGE

prioritization

• Invest in link bait (in most niches) as early on as possible

Entity Stacking

• Every site, especially new and YMYL should get their entity recognized by Google

• Google needs 30-50 “trusted sources” to recognize entities

• As these are “trusted sources” you don’t need to worry about velocity
Entity Stacking Example
Entity Stacking (Sites)

• Remember, this is geodependant too

• Citations = Yelp, FourSquare, BBB, MapQuest, HotFrog, BrownBook, Local Chamber of Commerce etc

• Social Profiles = LinkedIn Pages, Facebook Pages, X Profiles, Instagram Profiles, TikTok Profiles,

SnapChat Profiles, Twitch Profiles etc

• Reference Sites = Wikipedia, CrunchBase, PitchBook, ProductHunt, GlassDoor, IMDB, AngelList,

BetaList,

• Press Releases = Yahoo, PRNewsWire, NewsMax, MarketWatch, GlobeNewsWire etc

• PR = Interviews, reviews etc

Pillow Links

• Confirmed by the recent Google leaks

• Offset some pages toxic link signals with clean links

• Build enough links at the start and new toxic or negative links can be offset by the pillows

• Pillow links usually include Reddit, Flipboard, Tumblr, SlideShare, LinkedIn Pulse, Medium etc
NoFollow Diversity

Stop ONLY chasing dofollow links

NoFollow links can still pass juice, do still pass trust signals
and can be activated anyway

They’re usually free, very easy to build and can contribute

significant signals over the lifetime of the site
Link Velocity

• One of the hardest things to give advice on, because it’s so dependant on the target site

• What is your existing link profile? How many pages do you have? How many pages are you

publishing? How many pages are you building links at? What type of links are you building? Are you

building pillow links in tandem? Is your entity recognized and trusted already?

• Common sense wins out…

• Don’t count entity and pillow links (within reason)

Anchor Text

• Better safe than sorry mentality

• It’s less of a science, more of an art

• The higher authority, the more aggressive you can be

• Check money page SERPs to see if you even need to build links directly or not (e.g. Ecomm cat

pages)

• We prefer to link via supporting content, where we use white hat anchor text like the article title or

something to do with the author/brand

• Save your best anchors for the best possible link, which usually doesn’t exist
Contextual Links

• Multiple reasons you get more power (which were also recently confirmed by the Google leak)

mostly to do with surrounding context

• Use the surrounding words to augment your anchors

• It doesn’t really matter where on the page the link is

• Our rule of thumb for contextual linking is 1 internal/50 words and 1 external per 150 words
Authority vs. Relevancy
EXACT MATCH DR 99

THE PERFECT
(IMPOSSIBLE) SPOT

DR 0 0
RELEVANCE
Page Level Link Opportunities

• If you are constantly building up your root domain authority

• You should also be constantly looking for opportunities at a page level

• This means calculating the ROI of increasing individual pages rankings, and then

investing or waiting
Image Links

• A great source of consistent, free links

• Anyone and their iPhone can go take images, submit to stock photo sites (automated distribution

too) and claim links back

• Setup image alerts to outreach people using your image and have an outreach template ready to

ask for credit back

• Image links don’t have anchors (but titles do get count somewhat) so can be good pillows too
Link Toxicity & Link Neutrality

• Toxic links do exist, but most get neutralized

• If you’ve been doing SEO (or a site has had SEO) for 10+ years, it is likely it should disavow

• LRT toxicity score is a very strong indicator, and can be good for analytical building

beforehand

• Toxic links are only at a page level

• Numerous toxic links will cause triggers, and potentially manual actions or algorithmic hits
Tiered Link Building

• Activate NoFollow links, increase power of authority links and derisk direct link velocity

• PBN Services SUCK

• Very cheap niche edit services (Legiit, Fiverr etc)

Guest Posts

• Use guest posts that have the highest ROI (High DR, Low Cost, High Relevancy)

• Orphan links are massively devalued, you will often have to powerup guest posts

or buy them with internal links included

• With AI, you can now make very high quality articles for your guest posts, don’t

cheap out and devalue the quality signals of the page, they count!
Niche Edits (Link Insertions)

• Very affordable, but Google has been trying

(and mostly failing) to combat them for years,

the recent leak exposed they track historical

anchors and page changes

• I would always recommend using them in

moderation, or acquiring from some of the

biggest sites in the game!
