The Rizals is considered one of the biggest
families during their time, which consists of 13
members including the Parents.
Domingo Lam-co is the family’s paternal
ascendant. He was a full-blooded Chinese who
came to the Philippines from Amoy, China in
the closing years of the 17th century and
married a Chinese half-breed Ines de la Rosa.
According to researchers, Rizal - Mercado family
had also a Japanese, Spanish, Malay and
Even Negrito blood aside from Chinese.

FRANCISCO MERCADO (1818-1898)
Father of Jose Rizal who was the youngest of
13 offsprings of Juan and Cirila Mercado.
Born in Biñan, Laguna on April 18, 1818
studied in San Jose College, Manila; and died
in Manila.
TEODORA ALONSO (1827-1913)
Mother of Jose Rizal who was the second child
of Lorenzo Alonso and Brijida de Quintos.
She studied at the Colegio de Santa Rosa.
a business-minded woman, courteous,
religious, hard-working and well-read.
born in Santa Cruz, Manila on November 14,
1827 and died in 1913 in Manila.

Eldest child of the Rizal-Alonzo marriage. Married Manuel
Timoteo Hidalgo of Tanauan, Batangas.
PACIANO RIZAL (1851-1930)
Only brother of Jose Rizal and the second child. Studied at San
Jose College in Manila; became a farmer and later a general of
the Philippine Revolution.
NARCISA “ Sisa” RIZAL (1852-1939)
The third child. married Antonio Lopez at Morong, Rizal; a
teacher and musician.

The fourth child. Married Silvestre Ubaldo; died in 1887 from

The sixth child. Married Daniel Faustino Cruz of Biñan,

Rizal’s family acquired a second surname – Rizal –
which was given by a Spanish alcalde mayor of Laguna,
who was a family friend.

Calamba was located in the midst of a rich agricultural
region in Laguna,the lake province of Luzon, famed for

He learned the alphabet by the age of 3.
He could both read and write by the age of 5.
At 5 years old he began to draw with his pencil without
any assistance.
Uncle Jose Alberto – fine artist, helped him develop
his innate gift in arts.
Uncle Gregorio – tireless reader, lectured him
foundation of success and profound logic.
Uncle Manuel – sport and fitness enthusiast, helped
him develop his frail body by way of athletic drills,
martial arts and physical exercises.

He was baptized JOSE RIZAL MERCADO at the Catholic of
Calamba by the parish priest Rev. Rufino Collantes with Rev.
Pedro Casañas as the sponsor.

When he was four years old, his sister Conception, the eight child
in the Rizal family, died at the age of three. It was on this
occasion that Rizal remembered having shed real tears for the
first time.
1869
At the age of eight, Rizal wrote his first poem entitled "Sa Aking
Mga Kabata." The poem was written in tagalog and had for its
theme "Love of One’s Language."

• June 1869 – Paciano accompanied Pepe to
Binan to continue his studies.
• Maestro Justiniano Aquino Cruz – Paciano’s
former teacher and adisciplinarian.
• The school was made of Nipa and dubbed as the house
of the Maestro
• Pepe was assigned a seat and was asked and replied at
once:
• Maestro: Do you know Spanish?
• Pepe: A little Sir.
• Maestro: Do you know Latin?

son laughed at Pepe’s answers.
SCHOOL AT ATENEO
• On June 10, 1872, Jose accompanied by Paciano went to
Manila. He took entrance examination on Christian
doctrine, arithmetic and Reading at the College of San
Juan de Letran, and passed them.
• His father, who first wished him to study at Letran
changed his mind and decided to send him to Ateneo.
• Upon his return to Manila, accompanied again by
Paciano and matriculated at the Ateneo de Municipal.
• Father Magin Ferrando – the college registrar who first refused

• He boarded in a house outside Intramuros, on Caraballo Street,
25 minutes walk from the college. The boarding house was
owned by a spinster named Titay who owed the Rizal (Mercado)
family an amount of P300.

Rizal was placed at the bottom of externo.
After the first week, the infirm Calamba boy advanced swiftly. At
the end of the month, he became emperor. He was the dazzling
student in the whole class, and he was awarded a prize.

2nd Year in Ateneo (1872-1873)
Nothing unusual happened during his second year, except that
he repented having neglected his studies in the previous year
because he was offended by the teacher’s remarks. So he
studied harder and gained emperorship.
At the end of the term, he received excellent grades and a gold
medal.
He undergoes private tutoring for Spanish lesson. P3 payment

3rd Year in Ateneo (1874-1875)
His mother was set free.
He did not make an excellent showing in his studies. His grades
remained excellent in all subjects, but he only won gold medal in
Latin. He failed in Spanish because his spoken Spanish was not
fluently sonorous. He was beaten by a Spaniard, naturally, could
speak Spanish with fluency and withright accentuation.
4th Year in Ateneo (1875-1876)
On June 16, 1875, he became an interno in Ateneo.
Fr. Francisco de Paula de Sanchez - a great educator and
scholar. Inspired Rizal to study harder and write poetry. Jose
considered him as his best professor in Ateneo.

Last Year in Ateneo (1876-1877)
He excelled in all subjects.
The most brilliant Atenean of his time, he was truly “the pride of
the Jesuits”
He finished his last year at the Ateneo in a blaze history. oMarch
23, 1877 – received his degree of Bachelor of Art with honors.

Being a child of a family landowners, Jose Rizal decided to study
for a degree in Land Surveying and Assessment at Ateneo
Municipal de Manila and graduated on March 14, 1877, with
honors or sobresaliente.
In 1878, he pursued his passion for arts as he enrolled at the
Faculty of Arts and Letters for a degree in Philosophy at the
University of Santo Tomas
