How did you differentiate polynomial

equation and polynomial function?
Polynomial Function:

A polynomial function of degree n is a function defined

by f(x) = anx + an-1x + an-2x +… + a1x + a0 = 0, where,
n n-1 n-2

an ≠ 0, n is a nonnegative integer and the coefficients

a0,a1,…an are real numbers. The leading term is anx , a0 is
n

the constant term; a0,a1,…an are the coefficients, and an

is the leading coefficient.
Polynomial Function:

The function is also denoted as y = f(x), where x

is the input of the function and y is the value of
the function.
EXAMPLE

f(x) = anx + an-1x

n n-1
+ an-2x n-2
+… + a1x + a0

f(x) = 3x + 7x + x – 4x + 2x – 5.
5 4 2 3
EXAMPLE

f(x) = 3x + 7x + x – 4x + 2x – 5.
5 4 2 3

Degree: 5
Leading term: 3x 5

Leading coefficient: 3
Coefficients: 3, 1, 7, -4, 2
Constant term: -5
StANDARD FORM OF
Polynomial FUNCtION

The polynomial function is in standard form

when the terms are arranged from the highest
exponent down to the lowest.
STANDARD FORM OF
POLYNOMIAL FUNCTION

f(x) = anx + an-1x

n n-1

YOUR TURN

Identify the degree, leading term, leading

coefficient, coefficients, constant term
APPLICATION

You went to the supermarket to buy foods for

yourself. You bought 5 apples and 1
watermelon, the price of the watermelon is
squared to the price of the apple. The store
gave you a 6 pesos discount since you paid using
your supermarket VIP card. Represent your total
cost using polynomial function.
QUIZ 1:

Write each polynomial function in standard form and

identify the degree, leading term, leading coefficient,
coefficients, and constant term.
1. f(x)= (x – 2)²(2x – 1)
2. f(x) = – 15 – x² – 17x + x³
3. y = 2x² + x³ – 6 – 5x
4. f(x) = 2x + 5x² + x³ – 8
