4 Quadratic Functions ⫸ A quadratic function is a function in the form:
⫸ Where , and are constants
⫸ A quadratic function is monic if ⫸ E.g:
Zeros and Roots
⫸ The solutions of a quadratic equation () are called roots ⫸ The -intercepts of a quadratic function () are called zeros ⫸ When talking about quadratics we use the words roots, zeros and - intercepts interchangeably Concavity and turning points For the parabola: ⫸ Concave up Concave down If the coefficient , the parabola is concave up ⫸ If the coefficient , the parabola is concave down
The turning point
⫸ Also known as the vertex or stationary point ⫸ Since a parabola is symmetrical, the turning point is always halfway between the intercepts (roots) Example 1. Sketch Showing intercepts and find the domain and range Example 2. Sketch Showing intercepts and vertex and find the domain and range Axis of symmetry ⫸ The axis of symmetry of the parabola is the vertical line with the equation:
The turning point
⫸ Depending on the concavity of the parabola the vertex is the minimum or maximum value of the parabola
⫸ The turning point has the coordinates:
(− 𝒃 𝟐𝒂 ( ,𝒇 − 𝒃 𝟐𝒂 )) Example 3. a.) Find the axis of symmetry and the minimum value of the quadratic function
b.) Find the coordinates of the vertex of the quadratic function . State the domain and range of the function. Please complete:
