Action Research: Making a Difference

Candidates will be
able to:
 explain action research in their
own words
 state the purposes of action
research
 list the stages in action research
Activity
Individual:

What is action research?

What is the purpose of conducting action
research?

ity
 what is your previous experience of
action research?
What is agreed on group definition of
action research?
What is the difference between basic and
action research ?
Activity
1. Background Reading (p. 105-106).

2. Identify terms that define action

research
…is a three-step spiral process
of (1) planning which involves
reconnaissance; (2) taking
actions; and (3) fact-finding
about the results of the action.
-Kurt Lewin (1947)
… is the process by which
practitioners attempt to study
their problems scientifically in
order to guide, correct, and
evaluate their decisions and
actions.
-Stephen Corey (1953)
…in education is study
conducted by colleagues
in a school setting of the
results of their activities
to improve instruction.
– Carl Glickman

Activity
What are the steps in conduction
action research?
There are different action research
models. For example :
Stephen Kemmis has developed a model
that go in cyclic form.

1. Initially problem is identified.
2. Collecting, analyzing and
interpreting data.
3. Implementing the plan (strategy).
4. Collecting data on the result
5. Evaluate the result
Action research has steps as
1.Planning
2.Acting
3.Observing
4. Reflecting
The stage of planning in action research
includes activities such as:-
1. Identifying and defining a problem
/starting point/
2.Reconnaissance( Describing, clarifying,
and analyzing the fact of situation) and
3. Developing action strategies).
I. Identifying and stating the
problem
II. Collect and analyze
evidence/Reconnaissance
III.Propose action/Action Plan
IV.Implement action
V. Evaluate action
VI.Recommend change
I. Identifying and stating the
problem
Identifying a Starting Point/ a Problem.

The following question may come to

your mind to enable you identify
good starting point.
•What issue in my practical
experience is worth of studying over
a period of time?
Criteria to Evaluate the starting point
1.Scope for action:- refers the area from
which the problem arises. Use the following
questions to check
a.Does the situation come from my own

field of experience?
a.Can I really do something about it?
b.Could I able to change the situation?
d. Am I independent up on the others?
1.Relevance: How important is this
situation to me and to my professional
improvement?
1. Is the issue valuable to be studied?
2. Am I ready to invest what I have dealing

with the situation?

3.Am I interested in this situation in order

to bring change and improvement ?

2. Manageability:- Refers checking
the issue under study with reference
to conditions you have.

1. Do I have enough time finance,

resources and knowledge? Will it
make too much demand on me?
. Writing the Title of the research
Example
When my students are doing group work,
most of them seem to waste a lot of time
(brief description of the situation).
How can I improve the amount of task
oriented time for pupils engaging in group
work? (the researcher’s/ practitioner’s
intention
The title should be SMART
 stated in common language, avoiding jargon
 concise
 meaningful
Writing the background of the
study
Stating the objectives and
leading question of the study
II. Reconnaissance stage
Indentify those individual who
have problems
Describe their problems in
detail
Identify the data source
Identify the data gathering
tools
The collection of data is an important step in
deciding what action needs to be taken .
There are many tools for collection of data:
Observation journals
interviews individual files
portfolios logs of meetings
diaries videotapes
field notes case studies
audio tapes records – tests, report cards,
photos attendance
memos self-assessment
questionnaires samples of student work,
focus groups projects, performance
anecdotal records
Triangulation
Use at least three sources and data
gathering tools
Collecting analyzing and interpreting
data
Collecting Reviews from Related
Literature to obtain acceptable and relevant
solutions
Conclusion
Identifying the causes problems and
suggesting solutions
3 Developing Action Strategies

Using the information from the data collection

and review of current literature, design a plan
of action that will allow you to make a change.
Criteria for Developing Good Action Strategy
1. Usefulness
The action strategy has to be useful so as
to bring some desired change in the
situation or practice.
Researcher has to answer questions like :
1. How useful is this action strategy?
2, Will it solve the problem? For how long?
3. Might there be any additional positive
effect?
4. Might there be any negative side effects ?
1.Practicality:
Some ideas can be useful but simply not
feasible in some particular situation due to
different reasons. For example, it
1.May take too much time.
2.May require the cooperation of other
peoples who are not willing to give it.
3 May be the researcher does not have the

necessary knowledge and expertise

Your action strategy should consider the following
points.

1.What to act/activities to be processed

2.Who will take part in the process?
3. How the actions/activities to be carried ou
4. Where the action/activities to be carried
out?
5. Why the actions/activities to be carried ou
6. When the action/activities to be carried
out?
Group Work.
 Identifythe title
for your action
research project.
Prepare a
proposal for the
next session
