VIC Selective School Exam
• Reasoning – Reading (35 minutes)
• Mathematics (30 minutes) • General Ability – Verbal (30 minutes) • General Ability – Quantitative (30 minutes) • Writing task (40 minutes) Examination format The SEHS entrance exam is a paper-based assessment, designed to test ability rather than achievement and will include a focus on higher order thinking skills. The required knowledge in any section will not exceed that found in the Year 8 curriculum. The SEHS entrance exam will take approximately three hours to complete. Candidates may be in the exam venue for three and half hours from the advertised exam start time to allow for administration, announcements and candidate questions. The exam includes: 1. Reasoning – Reading (35 minutes) 2. Reasoning – Mathematics (30 minutes) Short break (Approx. 20 min) 3. General Ability – Verbal (30 minutes) 4. General Ability – Quantitative (30 minutes) Short seated break (Approx. 5 min) 5. Writing (40 minutes) It will contain a series of tests including multiple choice questions and written tasks. Reasoning tasks in Reading and Mathematics assess a student’s ability to use their life and academic knowledge and skills and apply them to problems and tasks using the information provided in the task. General ability tasks assess a student’s ability to learn in each of the tested areas by allowing the student to demonstrate their higher order thinking and problem-solving skills.
