5. (-3,-4)
DISCUSSION

Graphs of Linear Equations

A linear function can be described by its equation,
either in the form y = mx + b or Ax + By = C.
A linear equation can also be described by its graph.
Graphing linear equations can be done using any of the
four methods:
1. Using two points
2. Using x- and y-intercepts
3. Using the slope and the y-intercept
4. Using the slope and a point
DISCUSSION

Graphing Linear Equations Using Any Two Points

One method of graphing a linear equation is using any two
points. Remember that two points are enough to draw the graph
of a linear equation
Example:
Graph the linear equation that passes through points
(0,1) and (1,4).

Solution:
Plot the given points
Draw a line through them.
DISCUSSION

Example: Graph the linear equation that passes through points

(0,1) and (1,4).

Solution:
Plot the given points
Draw a line through them.
DISCUSSION

Graphing Linear Equations Using 𝒙 and 𝒚-intercept

is by using the 𝑥-intercept 𝒂 and the 𝑦-intercept 𝒃. The 𝑥 and 𝑦-

Another way of graphing a linear equation in two variables

intercepts of the line could represent two points, which are (𝒂,0)
and (𝟎,b). So, the intercepts are enough to draw the graph of a
linear equation

Example:
Graph the linear equation y = 3x+1.
DISCUSSION

Example: Graph the linear equation

y = 3x+1

To find the 𝑥-intercept of a line given its equation, let 𝑦 = 0,

Solution:

then solve for 𝑥. To find the 𝑦-intercept, let 𝑥 = 0, then solve

for 𝑦.
Hence, the 𝑦-intercept is 1. In symbol, 𝑏 = 1. The point in the 𝑦-

The 𝑥-intercept 𝒂 is -1/3 while the 𝑦-intercept𝒃 is 1.

axis is (0,1).

Now, plot the 𝑥 and 𝑦-intercepts, then draw a line that passes
through them..
DISCUSSION

Example: Graph the linear equation

y = 3x+1
Solution:
The 𝑥-intercept 𝒂 is -1/3
while the 𝑦-intercept𝒃 is
1.
DISCUSSION

Graphing Linear Equations Using Slope and One Point

Graphing a linear equation can also be done using the
slope and one point

Example:
Graph the line whose slope is 3 and contains the point
(2,−4
DISCUSSION

Example: Graph the line whose slope is 3 and contains the

point (2,−4

Solution:
1. Plot the given point. (2,−4).
2. Use the slope formula m=rise/run to identify the rise and the
run. The slope of the line is 3 which is equal to 3/1 .
3. Starting at the given point (2,−4), count out the rise (3 units
up) and run (1 unit to the right) to mark the second point.
(Note that the slope is positive)
4. Draw a line passing the points.
DISCUSSION

Example: Graph
m = 3, (2,-4)
Solution:
1. Plot the given point.
2. Use the slope formula
m=rise/run to identify the
rise and the run.
3. Starting at the given
point, count out the rise
and run to mark the
second point
4. Draw a line passing the
points.
