BIOS

BASIC
INPUT/OUTPUT
SYSTEM
BIOS instructs the computer on how to
perform basic functions such as booting
and keyboard control.

BIOS is also used to identify and configure

the hardware in a computer such as the
hard drive, floppy drive, optical drive, CPU,
memory, and related equipment.
HOW TO
ACCESS BIOS
BIOS
Steps in next slide can be used
to access the BIOS setup utility
on your PC, no matter what
operating system is installed.
This is because the BIOS is part
of your motherboard hardware
and has nothing at all to do with
what's on your hard drive.

Getting into BIOS isn't at all hard,

but it can be tricky on some
systems.
1. Restart your computer, or turn it on if it's already off

2. Watch for an "entering setup" message in the first few

seconds after turning on your computer. This message
varies greatly from computer to computer and also
includes the key or keys you need to press to enter BIOS.

Here are some common ways you might see this BIOS
access message:

> Press [key] to enter setup

> Setup: [key]
> Enter BIOS by pressing [key]
> Press [key] to enter BIOS setup
> Press [key] to access BIOS
> Press [key] to access system configuration
3. Quickly press the key or keys instructed by the previous
message.

NOTE: “You need to press the BIOS access key several

times to enter BIOS. BUT don't hold the key down or press
it too many times or your system may error or lock up. If
that happens, just restart and try again.”

4. Use the BIOS setup utility as required.

> That might mean managing memory settings,

configuring a new hard drive, changing the boot order,
resetting the BIOS password, or other tasks.
HOW TO USE
BIOS
BIOS supports several hardware
configuration options that can be changed
through the setup utility. Saving these
changes and restarting the computer
applies the changes to the BIOS and alters
the way BIOS instructs the hardware to
function.
Here are some common things you can do in most BIOS systems:

> Change the Boot Order > Enable or Disable Onboard Audio
> Load BIOS Setup Defaults > Enable or Disable Onboard Floppy Controller
> Flash (Update) BIOS > Enable or Disable Onboard Serial/Parallel Ports
> Remove a BIOS Password > Enable or Disable ACPI
> Create a BIOS Password > Change the ACPI Suspend Type
> Change the Date and Time > Change the Power Button Function
> Change Floppy Drive Settings > Change Power-on Settings
> Change Hard Drive Settings > Change Which Display is Initialized First on
> Change CD/DVD/BD Drive Settings > Multi-Display Setups
> View Amount of Memory Installed > Reset Extended System Configuration Data (ESCD)
> Change the Boot Up NumLock Status > Enable or Disable BIOS Control of System Resources
> Enable or Disable the Computer Logo > Change Fan Speed Settings
> > View CPU and System Temperatures
Enable or Disable the Quick Power On Self Test
> Enable or Disable the CPU Internal Cache > View Fan Speeds
> Enable or Disable the Caching of BIOS > View System Voltages
> Change CPU Settings > Enable or Disable Onboard USB
> Change Memory Settings > Enable or Disable Onboard IEEE1394

QUESTIONS?
FAQ

Is updating the BIOS a good thing?

Updating the BIOS can be a good thing when your PC manufacturer is offering a BIOS
update with improvements, security patches, bug fixes, and new hardware support. If
something goes wrong during the updating process, however, there may be irreparable
harm. BIOS updates don't usually offer any major speed boosts or new features, so if it's
not a necessary update, it may be best to leave things along.

What is a BIOS password?

A BIOS password is an optional additional level of authentication protection. Through
the BIOS Setup Utility, you can set up a Setup Password, which will require a password
when a user is trying to access the BIOS Setup Utility, and a System Password, which
will be required before the system can boot up. BIOS passwords are different from
Windows account passwords.
FAQ

What is a PS2 BIOS file?

A PS2 BIOS file is a way to play classic PlayStation 2 games on your Windows PC. To
accomplish this, you'll also need to download a PS2 emulator and game ROMs. Some
PS2 emulators include a PS2 BIOS file, which makes the process easier. Always
download PS2 emulators, BIOS files, and game ROMs from trustworthy sources.

What is a good BIOS time?

In the Task Manager, under the Startup tab, you'll see Last BIOS Time and a number of
seconds. This refers to how long it takes to go from starting up your computer to seeing
the Windows logo on the screen. Anywhere from five to 15 seconds is a normal Last
BIOS time. There are things you can do to speed up your Last BIOS time, such as setting
your OS as the first boot drive and enabling Fast Boot.
