EBC 1

Week 14
How to Pass EBC 1

Passing this semester is based on the score you


achieve in your final exam.

To pass this semester you MUST achieve 60%+ in


your final exam.

If final exam is less than 60% then coursework &


mid-test scores are NOT added
The Exam
The timing for the exam is 1 hour 45 minutes

Reading only 15 minutes


Writing 1 hour 30 minutes

You should allow 22.5 minutes to write each task –


make sure that you complete all the tasks in the exam
paper.

If you have time at the end of the exam, read through


your answers and check your spelling and punctuation
You will be expected to complete
• A business letter
• A memorandum
• A fax
• A WP template
The Exam
You will have 15 minutes reading time – NO
writing, underlining or making notes are allowed
during this time. Use this time as follows:
1. Read the exam instructions.
2. Read the scenario and each task carefully,
think about what type of communication you
need to write. Start to identify the key points
and think about how you would write the key
points in sentences.
3. When you are told you can start writing do the
tasks in order.
Instructions
• Write in blue or black ink only – make sure you bring a
spare pen
• You may write on the question paper and/or use a
highlighting pen to identify key points
• You may use an English and Indonesian/English
dictionary
• DO NOT use tippex – if you make a mistake cross out
neatly and write the correction above or beside
• Remember your handwriting should be neat and tidy
• All your answers should be written in the exam
question paper

Layout
Both the business letter and memorandum have
marks for layout

Make sure you learn the layouts

Memorandum requires you to change 1st person


to 3rd person and 3rd person to 2nd person – learn
your pronouns!
Content
All tasks require you to identify the content for
the communication

The content (key points) can be in the manager’s


note to you and/or identified on the task itself.

Identify the key points and put them in a logical


order
Tone
Tone = appropriateness of style, register and
vocabulary for the purpose of the task
1. Register = Type of language used when writing
to others – wanna, gonna or want to, going to –
use complete sentences
2. Register & Style - Should the communication be
formal or informal? Think about the difference
between a business letter and memo.
3. Use business vocabulary e.g. inform, request,
place an order, enclose a catalogue
4. Link sentences together – and, as well as, which,
also etc
Fluency
Fluency = degree of success with which message is
conveyed
1. Are all the key points included?
2. Are the key points organised logically?
3. Is the communication effective? Can the receiver
action your message?
4. Is your communication addressed to the right
person?
5. Have you followed your Manager’s instructions?
6. Is your writing full of spelling and punctuation errors
making the communication difficult to understand?
EBC 2
If you successfully pass EBC 1 you will be
promoted from an Administrative Assistant to a
Personal Assistant in EBC 2.

If you do not pass EBC 1 you will need to


complete further training (Short semester) to
enable you to continue to EBC 2 and the
position of Personal Assistant.
