OUTPUT DEVICES

Definition:
These are devices which displays the
data or information in a computer in
hard or soft copy . They include:
1. Monitors
They display computer outputs in
soft copy. Monitors are classified
on the following basis;
A. Display mechanism
B. Color display

i. Cathode Ray Tube(CRT)
Monitors: They are old-
fashioned, relatively cheap,
bulky and power – consuming.
ii. Liquid Crystal
Display(LCD)Monitors: These
are flat screen monitors which
became more prevalent in the
third millennium. They are
relatively expensive, portable,

Based on Color Display
i. Monochrome Monitors: they
produce only one type of color
upon a background color e.g.
white upon black
ii. Colour Monitors: they produce
many colours. They are of various
types:
 Colour Graphic Adapter (CGA)
 Enhanced Graphic Adapter(EGA)
 Video Graphic Array(VGA)
 Super Video Graphic Array(SVGA)
2. Multimedia Projectors:
They project images on the
computer screen onto a larger
separate screen. They are mostly
used for presentation.
3. Printers
They are used for making
printouts or displaying
information in hard copy. The
part of a printer(virtual memory)
where documents are quickly
saved for printing is called
Buffer. The queuing of
Printers come in two major
categories namely:
Impact and Non – impact printers.
A. Impact Printers:
They make marks on papers by
striking through ink ribbon.
Examples of impact printers are:
i. Dot-Matrix printer: speed of
operation is about 50 to 400
characters per second.
ii. Daisy wheel and thimble:
operating speed is about 90
characters per second and
iii. Print wheel printers(Line
matrix): prints a whole line at a
time.
Other examples include band, bar,
chain and drum printers.

b. Non-Impact Printers: uses a
non-striking method to transfer
characters and images onto
papers without ink ribbon.
Examples are:
i. Ink-jet printers: they have
strong colour mixing feature
and produce images of
characters on paper by
spraying dots of ink.
ii.Laser printers: operates in
same way as a photocopier.
They are fast and can print 80
iii. Iris printers: they are similar
to inkjet but faster. Prints on
both paper and cloths.
iv. Thermal printers: transfers
characters to thermally
sensitive paper using heat in
black and red only.
v. Electrostatic printers: form
images using electrically
charge ink.

4. Plotter : for producing precise
and quality graphics on very
large papers. e.g. maps, charts
and architectural drawings.
