Introduction to Intelligent Reflecting
Surface(IRS)
 Intelligent Reflecting Surface is a Passive Reflector
 IRS is basically a 2D meta surface that composed of
the large array of passive scattering element
 IRS helps to Reflect the Wireless Signal waves and
reconfigure the wireless signal propagation to achieve
high spectral and energy efficiency.
 `IRS improves the energy and spectrum efficiency to
combat with fading characteristics in wireless comm.
Necessity of IRS in 6G communication
• Recently, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)(or its- various equivalents
such as reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has emerged as a
promising technique to proactively control the radio propagation
environment by smart signal reflection and thereby enhance the
wireless communication performance significantly.
• Specifically, IRS is a digitally controlled metasurface that comprises a
large number of passive reflecting elements, each being capable of
changing the amplitude and/or phase of the incident signal
independently .
• With IRSs properly deployed in wireless networks, the wireless
channels can thus be dynamically adjusted by jointly tuning the
reflecting elements of all IRSs so as to maximize the communication
throughput.
5G Mobile Communication Standards
What is 5G Standard:-
5G stands for the fifth generation of mobile telecommunications. The new
communication standard builds upon its predecessor 4G (LTE), but enables significantly
faster data transmission with minimal latency and thus entirely new application areas.

Key features of 5G technology

Ultra-fast mobile internet up to 10Gbps
Low latency in milliseconds (significant for mission critical applications)
Total cost deduction for data
Higher security and reliable network
Uses technologies like small cells, beam forming to improve efficiency
Forward compatibility network offers further enhancements in future
Cloud based infrastructure offers power efficiency, easy maintenance and upgrade of
hardware
6G Mobile Communication Standards

In the 6G era, the digital, physical and human world will seamlessly fuse to trigger extrasensory experiences.
Intelligent knowledge systems will be combined with robust computation capabilities to make humans endlessly
more efficient and redefine how we live, work and take care of the planet. Even though there is still a lot of
innovation in 5G with the 5G-Advanced release of new standards, Nokia Bell Labs has already begun the research
work on 6G to make it commercially available by 2030.

Key features of 6G system

Supports Higher Number of Mobile Connection
Supports Higher Data Rates
Revolutionize the Healthcare Sector
Independent Frequencies
Large Coverage

Disadvantages of 6G system
Difficult to use
Expensive
Privacy
Compatibility issues
Negative Impact on Health
Mobile(Smartphone) user projection up to 2027 (in Millions)
Basic operation of IRS
 2D surface.
 Composed of a large number of sub-wavelength reflecting elements (small
antennas such as micro-strip patches).
 Each reflecting element is connected to a tunable chip to change its load
impedance such as PIN diode or varactor .
 The on/off state of the PIN diodes results in different load impedances and
generate a phase-shift difference of π.
Intelligent Reflecting Surface
Also if we control bias voltage of the varactors, this results in continuously tunable load impedance and induces in
continuous phase shift.
In addition, variable resistor can be attached to change the amplitude of reflection coefficient
So, we control the reflection coefficient (amplitude and phase) of each reflecting element individually.
