What is Social Science?
 This science is engaged in the study of
SOCIETY, SOCIAL RELATION and HUMAN
BEHAVIOR.
 SOCIETY is a group of people living together
that maintain culture, traditions, and norms.
It is a group of people who live
within the same territory, share a common
culture, perpetuate themselves through
reproduction, and constitute a more or less
self-sufficient unit (Zanden, 1993)
What is Social Science?
 This science is engaged in the study of
SOCIETY, SOCIAL RELATION and HUMAN
BEHAVIOR.
 SOCIETY is a group of people living together

expression of thoughts and feelings
of an individual.

 This is concerned with the search for
knowledge and empirical truth and the
development of theory.
 Anthropology is defined as the “scientific study
of humanity, the similarities and diversity of
cultures, and attempts to present an
integrated picture of humankind”. It studies
the biological, social, and cultural
development of humankind and seeks to find
answers to questions of why people are
different and how similar they are.

 Geography this is the study of
places and their relationship to
people and environment.
 Linguistics is a scientific study
on human language, symbols
and its development.

on distinct facet of a social phenomenon while
applied social science attempts to focus on a
distinct issue but use insights arising from
various social science disciplines
 Social science disciplines may become applied
while others remain theoretical
 When social science theories, concepts,
methods and findings gain application to
problems identified then applied social science
is achieved.
Functions and Effects of Applied Social
Sciences
 Generate knowledge for evidence-based
actions and solutions to social problems
and issues.
 They cause social science to do things
rather than just remain a source of
factual knowledge
 They generate practical solutions to
complex social problems

information and thereby serves the rights of an
individual and the public to be informed and be

empowerment and liberation of people for
holistic well being.
