Why SDN?

5
What is Software Defined Networking?

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) defines how a networking and

computing system can be built using a combination of open, software-based
technologies and commodity networking hardware.

This architecture decouples the system that makes decisions about where
traffic is sent (the control plane) from the underlying systems that forward
traffic to the selected destination (the data plane).

Shorten TTM Network Elements

• Vertical OSS integration • Cloud based application development

• Closed service development circle • Open to 3rd APP developer
• Long TTM: vendor release cycle + integration • DevOps: Development and operation

DevOps - Development and Operations:

Is a software development method that stresses communication, collaboration, integration, automation and measurement of cooperation
10 between software developers and other information technology (IT) professionals.

OpenDaylight is composed of a
number of different modules that
can be combined as needed to
meet the requirements of a given
scenario.

Highlights of ONOS

•Service Providers (End Users) own the vision.

Ideology •Service Providers define and drive ONOS platform.

•Initiated and guided by leading SPs (AT&T/NTT), and supported by top vendors (Huawei/Ericsson),
Guiders •Quickly responded by many SPs (SKT, China Unicom, etc) and by Cisco as well.

•Initially driven by the requirements from AT&T Domain 2.0, which rises the bar to the architecture of SDN Controller,
•PoC use cases: IP+Optical, IP RAN, L3 VPN, Segment Routing, SDN-IP, BGP Peering, etc,
Architecture •Focused on the key features: high scalability, high performance, HA; and aims at providing flexible and agile programmable
capability, support the smooth SDN migration from legacy network.

Release Agile, release every 3 month.

•Huawei is one of the nine ONOS founding members and plays a crucial role in development of architecture and eco-system.
•Huawei introduce customer scenario, enrich SBI & NBI, contribute open source codes and dedicate to help ONOS success.

16
ONOS - SDN network operating system for
Service Providers • Advanced Architecture
• Flexible Scale-out
• Multi-layer IP + Optical • High Availability
• Segment Routing • Real-time Network Control
• Cloud POP (vCPE, vBNG, vRouter etc)
• SDN MBH etc….
Distributed
Architecture
• High Throughput of Application
