Mathematicians
By Kaeshav Varshan 6 - A
Who are
Mathematicians
The legend AryaBhatta
• Aryabhatta is the father of Indian
mathematics.
• His major work is known as
Aryabhatiya. It consists of Spherical
Trigonometry, Quadratic Equations,
Algebra, Plane Trigonometry, Sums of
Power Series, Table of Sine.
• Aryabhatta was born in 476 AD, in
Ashmaka in Kerala.
• Aryabhatta died in 550 AD in India.
Aryabhatta’s Discovery
Did you Know Aryabhata (Satellite)
• India’s First satellite was named after the
legend Aryabhatta. It was launched on
April 19 1975.
• Aryabhata discovered an approximation
of pi, 62832/20000 = 3.1416.
• He also correctly believed that the planets
and the Moon shine by reflected sunlight
and that the motion of the stars is due to
Earth’s rotation.
Brahmagupta
• Brahmagupta wrote two important works on
mathematics: the Brahmasphutasiddhanta and
the Khandakhadyaka.
• He was the first mathematician to discover and
to use the concept of the number zero (0).
• Brahmagupta was born in 598 AD.
• Brahmagupta died in 668 AD.
Brahmagupta’s Discovery
DID YOU KNOW Cyclic quadrilateral
• Zero and its operation are first defined
by Brahmagupta in 628 AD.
• He was the first mathematician to
provide the formula for the area of a
cyclic quadrilateral.
• He was the first person to discover the
formula for solving quadratic
equations.
Srinivasa Ramanujan
• Srinivasa Ramanujan was an Indian mathematician
• He made substantial contributions to mathematical
analysis, number theory, infinite series, and
continued fractions, including solutions to
mathematical problems that were considered
unsolvable.
• Ramanujan was born in 22nd December 1887 in
Tamil Nadu
• Ramanujan died on 26th April 1920.
Ramanujan’s Discovery

Did you Know Ramanujan Summation

• He worked out the Riemann series,
the elliptic integrals, hypergeometric
series, the functional equations of
the zeta function, and his own
theory of divergent series, in which
he found a value for the sum of such
series using a technique he invented
that came to be called Ramanujan
summation.
Shakuntala Devi
• Shakuntala Devi was an Indian
mathematician, writer and mental
calculator, popularly known as the "Human
Computer".
• Devi strove to simplify numerical
calculations for students.
• Shakuntala Devi was born on 4 November
1929.
• Shakuntala Devi died on 21st April 2013.

457 in 2 seconds. She calculated cube
root of 2373927704 as 1334 in 10
seconds. She calculated the 8th root of
Calyapudi Radhakrishna Rao
• C.R. Rao is an Indian American
mathematician and statistician.
• His contributions to statistical theory and
applications are well known, and many of his
results, are included in the curriculum of
courses in statistics at bachelor’s and
master’s level all over the world.
• C.R. Rao was born on 1920 in Karnataka.
• C.R. Rao dies on 12th February 2013.
