Lesson 1

Estimating the quotient of 3- to -

4 digit dividends by 1- to -2 digit
divisors with reasonable results
Estimate - to find a value that is close enough to the right
answer, usually with some thought or calculation involved.

Estimation of a number is a reasonable guess of the actual

value to make calculations easier and realistic.

Estimation means approximating a quantity to the required

accuracy. This is obtained by rounding off the numbers
involved in the calculation and getting a quick and rough
answer.
There were 8 150 food packs prepared by the Local
Government Unit of Cainta. These food packs will be
distributed in 7 selected barangays who were greatly
affected by the pandemic. About how many food packs each
barangay will receive?

How many food packs were prepared by the LGU?

The LGU prepared 8,150 food packs.
How many barangays can receive the food packs?
There are 7 barangays to receive the food packs.
How the food packs will be distributed among the
barangays?
It will be distributed equally.
What operation will be use to answer the problem?
Division

What word in the problem that tells you to find the estimated
quotient?

The word “about how many”.

Round the dividend and 16 8 150
divisor to its highest place
value 20 8000
4 00
Cancel as many zeroes in 20 8000
the dividend as there are -8
0
in the divisor then divide
Each barangay will receive about
400 food packs.
What is the estimated quotient of 1 512 ÷ 29?
6 6 6 6 Round off the
29 1 512 30 2000 3 200 0 0 quotient to its
- 18
highest place
20
- 18 value.
When there is a remainder,
annex zeroes in the dividend 20
and continue dividing until the - 18
remainder is 0 or the 20
remainder repeats. - 18
2

The estimated quotient of 1 512 ÷ 29 is 70.

Lesson 2

Solving routine or non-routine problems

involving division of 3-to-4 digit numbers
by 1 - to - 2 digit numbers including
money using appropriate problem –
solving strategies and tools
Problem solving is very useful skill of every learner like you.
With thorough understanding and constant practice, this would
change you o think logically and eventually find it an enjoyable
activity.

Routine word problems are practical in nature and involve

the use of at least one of the four arithmetic operations

Non-routine word problems are complex problems that

require some degree of creativity or originality and
multiple ways to solve.
Lolo Kiko’s farm produces sweet mango fruits delivered in
public markets in Rizal. There are 9 030 mangoes harvested
this month. If each basket can be filled with 645 mangoes,
how many baskets are needed to pack all the mangoes

Who has a farm? Lolo Kiko has a farm.

What does the farm of Lolo Kiko produces?
It produces sweet mangoes.
How many mangoes were harvested?
There are 9030 mangoes harvested.
1. Understand
A What is asked? The number of baskets needed.
G What are the given data? 9030, 645
2. Plan
O What operation should be use? division
N Write the number sentence 9030 ÷ 645 = n
3. Carry out the plan
S Solve
4. Check and look back
A Check if the answer is correct.
9030 ÷ 645 = n

14 12
645 9030 645
- 645
x 1 114
- 22 58 85 00 25 8 0
+ 64 5
0 9030

Therefore, Lolo Kiko needs 14 baskets to pack all the

mangoes.
Billy has ₱100.00 bill. If he would like to change it to
smaller bills and coins such as ₱50.00, ₱20.00, and ₱10.00,
how many combinations can he have?

What does Billy have? Billy has ₱100.00 bill.

What does he like to do with his money?

He wants to change his ₱100.00 bill into smaller bills.
Different strategies used in answering non – routine
problem.
▪ Listing Method
▪ Making Table
▪ Illustration/Drawing/Diagram
▪ Guessing and Checking
▪ Looking for a pattern
▪ Working Backwards
▪ Breaking up a problem into smaller ones
A. Making a List
50 + 50 = 100
50 + 20 + 20 + 10 = 100
50 + 20 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 100
50 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10= 100
20 + 20 + 20 + 20 + 20 = 100
20 + 20 + 20 + 20 + 10 + 10 = 100
20 + 20 + 20 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 100
20 + 20 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 100
20 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 100
10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 100
B. Using a Table
₱50.00 ₱20.00 ₱10.00 TOTAL
Number of 2 ₱ 100.00
pieces 1 2 1 ₱ 100.00
1 1 3 ₱ 100.00

Our Lord God in heaven. Thank you for the new day you've bestowed upon us. Until
this moment, we still have our borrowed life and strength from you. We worship and
praise Your Holy Name. This moment, we will continue to study and acquire new
knowledge. May you bless each of us with witty brain to think fast and an inquiring
mind to be curious on whatever knowledge we will learn today. Most importantly
bless us with Your wisdom and a heart that will follow your commandments in order
for us to become worthy in our studies. You know that in this recent times, most are
suffering from hardships and economic crises. We humbly ask You to bless our
parents. May you shower Your abundant blessings and prosperity to each of our
homes. So that we can use these not only for our daily lives but especially for the
performance of our duties to your Holy name. We hope that you heard our prayer.
We ask all of these.
In the name of Jesus Christ, our Saviour. Amen.
Dianne wants to buy a pair of shoes that cost ₱850. She
has a cash on hand of ₱450. If she saves ₱50 a day, in how
many days will she be able to save the amount she needs?

Who wants to buy a pair of shoes?

Diana wants to buy a pair of shoes.
How much is the pair of shoes she wants to buy?
It costs ₱850.00
How much is her cash on hand?
Her cash on hand is ₱450.00.
1. Understand
The number days Dianne needs to save the amount
What is asked? she needs to buy a pair of shoes.
What are the given data? ₱850.00 ,₱450.00, ₱50.00
2. Plan
What operation should be use? division
Write the number sentence (850 – 450) ÷ 50 = n
What is the hidden question? How much does she save?
3. Carry out the plan
Solve
4. Check and look back
Check if the answer is correct.
(850 – 450) ÷ 50 = n
8
850 50 400 50
- 450 - 400 - 8
4 00 0 40 0

Therefore, Dianne needs 8 days to save the amount of

shoes.
What I Have Learned

How to the estimate the quotient?

To find the estimated quotient, round off the divisor and

dividend to the highest place value then divide. When
there is a remainder, annexed zeroes in the dividend and
continue dividing until the remainder is zero or the
remainder. Round off the quotient to its highest place
value.
To solve one-step or multi-step word problems, consider the following steps
and answer the questions after each step:
Step 1 – Understand
• Know what is asked:
• What are given:
Step 2 – Plan
• Know the operation
• Write the number sentence.
Step 3 – Solve
• Write the correct unit/label your answer.
Step 4 – Look Back Check your answer by performing
multiplication which is the inverse operation of division.
Multiply the quotient by the divisor and if the product is equal
to the dividend then your answer is correct.
Lesson 1: Round the dividend and divisor,
then estimate each quotient.

1.) 4 108 ÷ 82 =

2.) 573 ÷ 6 =

3.) 9 234 ÷ 28 =
Lesson 2: Read, understand then solve the problem.
