SETTING

THE TABLE
WMSU
Objectives:
At the end of this lesson, students can:
1. Discuss the importance of table setting.
2. Discuss important principles in setting the table.
3. Familiarize with the different types of table setting.
A B
In dining the setting of the
table is almost as important as
your food.
The attractive table adds to
the ambiance and environment
of a meal.
The place setting or the
spot where each item is placed
is needed for each diner.
The ambiance and
the occasion for dining
will indicate the type of
the table appointments to
be used for dining.
A particular styles of
meal service will
determine how specific
table settings will be done
to fit the menu and
lifestyle of the family.
Opportunities for creating a
soothing ambiance and beautiful table
for dinner arise from choices of the
table appointments to be used.
The manner of how a table should be arranged with the
aid of tableware or table appointments is known as TABLE
SETTING.
The Cover
A place setting or also referred to as “A cover” is the space and all
equipment required by a diner including the linens, dinnerware, flatware and
beverageware. The space for a single cover depends on space available and
the type of meal served.
A width of 20-30 inches; and a depth of not more than 15 inches is the
standard for a comfortable eating and reaching for a cover.
A balanced appearance should be considered in setting the cover.

Important Principles in Table Setting:
The occasion will set the mood to
figure out which table setting to use.
Selecting the right table setting
for the occasion will depend on several
factors, including: the formality of the
event, how many courses to be
served, and how it will be served.
Choose a table setting that will
give the guest the best experience at
your event.
General Rules: Table Setting

To start, let’s begin with a few general

table setting rules that apply to each
type of table setting.
• Utensils – utensils are placed in the
order in which they are used with the
first ones placed on the outside.
For example: the salad fork is placed
on the outermost edge of the left side
before the dinner fork. This is because
salads are usually served before the
main course.

apply to each type of table
setting.
• Forks – are usually placed on
the left side of the main service
plate.
Except for the dessert fork which
can be placed above the plate
and the oyster fork which is
placed on the right side.

general table setting rules that
apply to each type of table setting.
• Knives – are always placed on
the right side of the plate, with the
cutting blade facing inwards
towards the plate.
The exception is the butter knife
which is placed on the butter plate,
with the blade pointing downwards
and left.

• Placement – All utensils should be
placed about an inch from the edge
of the table and lined up evenly from
the bottom ends.
• Set only what you use – Only set the
utensils that will be used throughout 1 INCH
the service. If there is no soup,
there’s no need to set a soup spoon
4 Types of Table Settings:
1.) Formal
2.) Informal
3.) Basic
4.) Buffet
It is now time to learn more about
each of the table setting types
provided the basics should always
be considered as a standard.
Formal
In the formal tables setting the following
must be observed:
• It is often used for weddings, holiday
meals, or occasions when three or
more course to be served;
• It’s the setting used in high-end
restaurants that serves multiple
courses.
• The service plate comes with each
course to be served, so it is not
included when setting the table.
Informal
• Informal table setting is a great fit for
casual weddings, dinner parties, or
any occasion that needs a just bit of
dressing up without being too formal.
• The differences between the informal
table setting and the formal table
setting is just subtle as there are fewer
utensils involved in an informal table
setting, as well as fewer glasses. Also,
a butter plate may or may not be
provided.
Basic
• The basic table setting is a simplified
version of the informal table setting,
with just a few subtle differences.
• The basic table setting greatly used
for daytime brunches, casual dinner
parties, or for fancy dinners at home.
• No dessert utensils are included and
fewer glasses.
Buffet
• The buffet setting includes only
the essentials.
• Typically, there is no plate or
charger the plate is usually picked
up at the buffet table for the
guests to serve themselves.
• Alternatively, having no silverware
on the table is common, as
utensils are also used.
GROUP ACTIVITY
WHAT TO DO…
• From the given situations, your group must choose 2
situation. Answer the question after each situation.(How
would you set the table for this dinner?).

group can think of.
• Aside from the above questions, you must also answer the
following.
