MEDIA
1. TEXT INFORMATION AND
MEDIA
Text is defined as a way of conveying information or ideas, whether
hand-written, printed, or displayed on-screen. Media text pertains to the
specific outcomes of media production, encompassing written, audio,
and video forms (e.g., a TV episode, a book, a magazine or newspaper
issue, an advertisement, etc.).
THERE ARE PRINTED AND DIGITAL
Printed Text Examples TYPESDigital
OF TEXT.
Text Examples. Displayed text
• Books on-screen such as:
• Newspaper • Online news and articles
• Magazines • Online posters
• Flyers • Digital books
• Posters • Digital posters
• Brochure
ADVANTAGES
• Written language and symbols play a significant role in communicating information to
people. Text lessens the demands of remembering information, unlike when information is
taken from speech. Text provides a record, print or digital, which allows us to organized
information and data into various forms. Text also aids in our comprehension.
LIMITATIONS
• When information is communicated through text, it loses qualities of speech such as tone,
rhythm, pace, and repetition. These qualities support our comprehension and interpretation
process. In addition, limited vocabulary or poor word choice may also serve as a barrier in
the communicative process.
2. VISUAL INFORMATION AND
MEDIA
Visual media and information refer to materials, programs, applications, and other
media technologies that teachers and students use to formulate new information to aid
learning through the use, analysis, evaluation, and production of visual images.
Types
• Photography/ Still pictures
• Infographics
• Videos
• Data visualization (charts and graphs)
• Comic strips/ cartoons
• Maps
ADVANTAGES
• Picture Superiority Effect states that people are more likely to remember information
that are presented visually than text (Krum, 2015). Therefore, people remember
pictures better than words. Aside from information, people also turn to visuals for
entertainment, such as watching YouTube and Netflix.
LIMITATIONS
• Some of the cons of visual information and media are children and teenagers’
exposure to violence, drug use, and other unhealthy content. People’s health may also
be affected, such as weight problems and social isolation.
3. AUDIO INFORMATION AND
MEDIA
It is a means of communication that employs audio or recordings to convey and transfer
information using sound.
• Radio broadcast - This can be either live or recorded audio transmitted via radio
waves to reach a broad audience and requires licensing from the National
Telecommunication Commission.
• Music - Music has been part of people’s lives even before history was recorded.
According to Montagu (2017), it refers to “sound that conveys emotion.” Music is
used for various purposes such as entertainment and ritual.
3. AUDIO INFORMATION AND
• MEDIA
Sound recording - This refers to the act or process of making a record of
sound.
• Sound clips/effects - These replicate sounds or are artificially produced to
generate an effect in a dramatic presentation, enhancing the illusion of
reality in the production.
ADVANTAGES
• On the internet, audio materials are readily available and can be simply shared or
replicated. This is less expensive compared to videos and effective for stimulating the
listener's imagination.
LIMITATIONS
• Audio media needs a specific device or application before it can be played. And once
the recordings are distributed, it is hard to modify the material because some people
may already download it. Besides that, audio materials require people to actively
listen and, if needed, imagine the painted pictures through audio as it lacks visual
presentation.
4. MOTION INFORMATION AND
• MEDIA
Motion Media is a field that employs the principles of graphic design to
enhance filmmaking and video production by integrating animation and
visual effects. is a discipline that applies graphic design principles to
filmmaking and video production through the use of animation and visual
effects.
TYPES
1. According to format:
1.1 Animations
Celluloid Animation – an artist has to draw thousands of images on special paper and have them
photographed, frame by frame.
• 2D Animation
• 3D Animation
• Motion Graphics
• Stop Motion - like celluloid animation, but instead of drawing, artist use clay, puppets, cut-outs,
silhouettes, action figures, and other objects or materials
2. According to purpose:
2.1 Educational
2.2 Entertainment
2.3 Advertising
TYPES
2D and 3D Animation Motion Graphics
ADVANTAGES
• It can get the attention of viewers
• Accessible and can be watched over and over again. This is also helpful, especially
when trying to learn a skill. This method of learning is very popular nowadays
through the use of YouTube.
• It can be used in distant learning as well as in webinars
LIMITATIONS
• When motion media is consumed commercially, it cannot be interrupted or paused, for
instance, when watching it in cinemas. In addition, the production and distribution of
videos and films are more costly than the previously mentioned types of media.
5. MANIPULATIVE INFORMATION AND
MEDIA
In traditional media, consumers cannot engage or interact with the medium and its
other users. This is the opposite of manipulative or interactive media. Interactive
media involves a communication approach where the outcomes of a program rely on
the inputs from the user, and in turn, the user's inputs influence the program's
outputs
DIFFERENT PLATFORMS OF
• Social MediaINTERACTIVE
- It is a type of electronicMEDIA
communication in which
users create, share, and engage with each other’s content.
• Mobile and Web Apps and Sites - Applications are software that were
developed for various purposes such as educational, entertainment,
marketing. Moreover, shopping that is done online is also an
example of interactive media.
DIFFERENT PLATFORMS OF
INTERACTIVE
• Video Games MEDIA
(multi-player) - Examples are role-playing games
(RPG) and massively multiplayer online role-playing games.
• Virtual Reality - It is a computer-generated simulation where a
person can interact with a three-dimensional image or environment
by using special electronic equipment.
ADVANTAGES
• Interactive media allows people from any part of the world to connect and build an
online community which was not possible before the advent of the internet.
LIMITATIONS
There are negative effects of interactive media such as:
• Proliferation of false information
• Identity theft
• Cyberbullying
• Computer and internet addiction
6. MULTIMEDIA INFORMATION AND
According to Wilson et al. (2011),MEDIA
multimedia refers to the “combined use of
several media, especially for the purposes of education or entertainment. It can
also mean the integration of text, sound, full– or partial–motion video or graphics
in digital form.”
TWO OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING
CAN BE COMBINED TO CREATE
• Text
• Audio
MULTIMEDIA:
• Visual Image
• Video
• Interactivity
USES OF MULTIMEDIA
• For Entertainment and Fine Arts
• For Educational Purposes
• Engineering, Mathematical and Scientific Research
• For Presentation
• For Business and Commerce (examples are stand-alone terminals and kiosks
in different places; digital bulletin boards)
ADVANTAGES
• Multimedia gives variety that will cater to all types of audiences. This also helps to learn to
be more engaging.
LIMITATIONS
• Since multimedia consists of more than one medium, its production entails more skills
and more technological devices; thus, it is more expensive. Aside from that, creating and
producing it is time-consuming. The creator should also be knowledgeable about various
formats to ensure the compatibility of different devices.
