LESSON REVIEW

Before we start today's lesson, who

anyone recall our last meeting's
topic?
LESSON REVIEW

Classifying polynomials
LESSON REVIEW

What is Polynomial?
LESSON REVIEW

●A Polynomial is an algebraic
expression that represents a sum of one
more term containing whole number
exponents on the variables.
LESSON REVIEW

9x²+6x-1
½x³ - 3.4x + 7
Assume the numbers correspond to the letters
of the alphabet:
FIND A NAME'S VALUE BY
ADDING ITS DIGITS
Example:
M A R Y = 13 + 1 + 18+ 25 = 57

Find the numerical value of each name:

J U A N = 10 + 21 + 1 + 14 = 46
BEN= 2 + 5 + 14 = 21
L A U R A = 12 + 1 + 21 + 18 + 1 = 53

Find your name's worth. Compare it

to other students' names in your
class.
●What did we do in this activity?
●Find the numerical value of the given words

●Substitute the corresponding value of each

other
●Perform the indicated operation; we add all
the value
EVALUATING
ALGEBRAIC
EXPRESSIONS

A number is substituted or replaced for the variable in each

algebraic expression, the expression takes a numerical value.
And finding the value is what we call “Evaluating the
Algebraic Expression."
Replacing a variable with a number demonstrates the
Substitution Property of Equality.

If two quantities are equal, then one quantity can be replaced

by the other. For all numbers a and b, if a = b, then a may be
replaced by b.
EVALUATING
ALGEBRAIC
EXPRESSIONS

When a number is substituted for the variable in a

polynomial, the polynomial takes a numerical value. Finding
the value is called evaluating the polynomial.
EVALUATING
ALGEBRAIC
EXPRESSIONS
There are at least two steps involved in evaluating an
algebraic expression:

1. Replacing the variable by the given number value

(substitution)
2. Performing the indicated arithmetic following the order of
operations.
• First, simplify expressions within grouping symbols.
• Then, simplify powers.
• Then, simplify products and quotients in order from
left to right.
• Then, simplify sums and differences in order from left
to right.
●What the 2 steps are involved in
evaluating an algebraic expression?

1. Replacing the variable by the given

number value (substitution); and
2. Performing the indicated arithmetic
following the order of operations.
EXAMPLE:

1. 6x² + 3 2. 2x³-3x -4
when: x=0 when: a. x=3
b. x=-1
answer: 3
answer: a. 41 b.-3
●How you Evaluate Algebraic
Expression?

Remember the two steps involved in evaluating

an algebraic expression:
● Replacing the variable by the given number
value (substitution); and
● Performing the indicated arithmetic
following the order of operations
● Also, we should not forget the PEMDAS
rule. If we take that in our mind, we going
to solve or evaluate algebraic expression
successfully.
Tell whether each statement is True or False.

1. If x=-3, then the value of 4x + 5 is 17.

2. If b-4, then b³-3 is 61.
3. x²-5x²=-3x² for any value of x.
4. (5x²-7x+8) + (x² + 3x - 12) = 6x²-4x-4 for any value of
x
5. (a²-5a)-(a²-4a)=-9a for any value of a.
Quiz

Direction: Find the value of the following algebraic expressions using indicated constants.

1. 6a + 3; a=5
2. 15a – 24b +15; a = 4 & b = 2
3. x + 3(x – 5); x = 5
4. 50a(2-a); a = 7
5. 4a (13 – 9b); a = 6 & b = 1
